Ugly boiler box / chimney breast

The main bedroom in the two bed house I'm buying is an extremely awkward shape due to the chimney breast and built in boiler cupboard.
In an ideal world, I'd get the boiler moved as I hate the idea of it being in my bedroom. However that task will be too expensive for me, and I imagine ripping down the existing cupboard would be a hassle too. I'm living alone so I can't afford anything that isn't DIY and I'm personally terrible at DIY!
Has anyone got any tips to make the cupboard look less obtrusive? My best idea is to put a standing mirror i front of the chimney breast and then have floating shelves on the other side of it. I think it would look weird if I added another cupboard on the other side.
Would any particular colours help make it look less obvious / would decorating the cupboard work? Let me know your thoughts!

I don't think the cupboard does stand out as it's painted in the wall colour. However as the room is bare ATM there's no focal point. You could add a mirror or art etc and your eye will be drawn to that. I don't know how wide the chimney breast is but you could potentially consider having the bed in front with the shelves the other side (Which may leave room for storage on the opposite wall?)

i would however get the boiler serviced and make sure it's deemed safe. You could also get a carbon monoxide detector if you're worried

Hi Lucy - you could make a feature of the hole - in the past we have made a simple square architrave to frame the aperture and our clients have put candles in the hole, photos or other stylish items. You can also fit subtle lighting in there to illuminate a sculpture of some sort. We've also designed a number of schemes with the potential for a flueless gel fire, although none have been implemented to date - but I inlcude an image below from elsewhere on Houzz to show the sort of thing. No big TV! I know what my OH would say to that He couldn’t wait to get the big ass latest 4K tv. It would be a shame to lose the fireplace as it is a nice feature ( I’ve got nothing against traditional features) but if you have a nice one elsewhere in the house and this room is primarily for tv viewing then I’d be tempted to lose it. If you leave a small opening of the fire place you could do like Resh said and have a small gel burner, candles or some logs with fairy lights. Or maybe stash the AV equipment in there and cover with fire screen in front, back lit with orange Led lights so it kind of looks like a fire but isn’t. Dark colour walls sound fab, my only problem is I think the radiator will stick out like a sore thumb, so either paint it same colour as the walls, cover it, or maybe replace with one of them fancy Victorian style column radiators.

Thanks for your advice both of you. We live in England to answer your question Gabby. Is there a rule in Scotland that the aisles have to be 120cm and if so why ? Jonathan, I was kind of thinking we would want to use the island for eating meals on like we do now with our current kitchen table, but I guess if the DR is open to the kitchen then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few steps more to the dining room table (because we use it so infrequently at the moment I am finding that hard to visualise). I am going to post a better plan of our current kitchen and dining room (with the pantry taken out) and I am also going to post a photo looking out from the window in our dining room. I am wondering if we did turn the DR into our kitchen could we make the window ledge higher and put the units in an L-shape so we could put the sink in the window? (and still have space for an island) I know this goes against some of my earlier points, especially about being worried people would be able to look in at us/and would create a more goldfish bowl feeling but I am just playing around with ideas.

We were planning a kitchen reno 1.5 years ago. We needed to knock down a load-bearing wall between kitchen and dining room, built over a side door, remove all old flooring and install new laminate and kitchen units. The first quote a mate gave us was for £25k. Two others quoted £10k but were impossible to get hold off. Apparently, our project was too small for them. Finally we found a fab local family, who quoted us £7.5k for everything excluding laminated floors&kitchen install. We were to hire a carpenter separately and found a decent one which was charging £1.5k for kitchen installation and £1k (I think) for laminated floors.

Put a full length mirror on the cupboard, balance the other side with either another wardrobe ( you don't say if you have room for one elsewhere, or a nice armchair. Then put a dressing table in front of the chimney breast.

If you have no room for wardrobes elsewhere, the best thing to do is put sliding wardrobe doors across the front of the whole thing at a good wardrobe depth and cover it all up

You can buy these systems cheaply at Ikea and have a handyman install them, we are cheaper than carpenters etc and many of us are very used to putting such things and flat packs together, fast and efficiently.
