Botched bathroom job

I had one of the 4 guys that I had in for quotes to complete work on an en suite and small shower room.

It turned into a semi nightmare with all plasterboard having to be hacked off in both rooms due to the tiles taking most of it off when they came down.

I provided all fittings and most of the items needed however he did get some that I had obviously missed and was reimbursed for it.

the smaller of the shower rooms is much better with a more polished finish however I am having a nightmare with the en suite and could so with some advice.

once The trim was being i realised I had made a mistake and it looked cheap and was too big for the bevel edge he said that he couldn’t use a thinner trim as it would over hang the wider part of the tile where it’s cut. the end result is not good with the visible over hang of the trim.

the silicon is breaking up and thin in places with little to no care taken to keep it straight. I do think that clear should have been used on the shower edges ?!

generally the appearance looks cheap in my opinion when you look up close. From further away it doesn’t look too bad. ive Asked him to come back to change the trims he can’t give me a date and I’ve also asked him to come sort the silicon and make sure all trims actually join !!

I think im going to end up getting someone else in

Hiya,

Sorry to hear you're having problems!

Fitting/Tiling is a really tough job and changing half way through can have so much of a knock on effect and with fitters being booked 6 months, they can't afford to change jobs in between.

That being said, you are the end customer, you should have what you want.

In a similar problem, I had a customer who came to me after they bought nickel brassware everywhere but ordered chrome trims by mistake.

The fitter fitted them and then obviously they looked wrong. When she wanted them changed he said it wasn't possible as 'they don't do that trim in nickel' ... basically trying to pull wool over her eyes!

The fitter ended up redoing it but it did cock up the next 2 months of jobs.

Depending on what you paid (Fitters in Bristol, UK tend to be £6000-£8000 for a good 10-14 day job) depends on what finish you get. I know people that can do a bathroom fit for £1500 but I wouldn't be expected all the extra thoughts and planning to have gone into it.

With the silicone - Usually white is used to match with the grout or most fitters would nowadays use a tile trim of some sort just to guarantee themselves. It should last atleast 15+ years.

I suspect he needed to get into the next job and this one took longer than planned- partly because he ended up plasterboarding again and partly because he perhaps should have checked earlier that you had purchased the right trim. I say give him the opportunity to do the job again but remember the first time he fitted what you supplied and it is you that doesn’t like that it is the wrong product so should be expecting an additional bill.

Update -- my plumber finally returned. Not sure what he did while here, but he told me again it wasn't working -- then he did some work on a radiator which had a small leak. We were having a long discussion about options on pumps, new showers, taps etc and I read out the installation guide and he tried it again, and suddenly it worked. It is bizarre as I don't know how many times i tried it previously. My friend who works in construction ALSO called earlier today and tried it several times to no avail. It must have been extremely stiff or perhaps the plumber realised some airlock whilst fixing the radiator since I think water pressure is much stronger since he went. Thanks for everyones help -- i learned lots on plumbing and a valuable lesson to take out the installation manuals myself and not trust that trades men know everything!!! I feel like celebrating!!

Every day I give the bathroom a clean, I love shiny chrome and squeaky clean porcelain, if you keep on top of it it really only takes 10 mins max, including the floor tiles. Use disposable kitchen roll for your loo, and 2 glass cleaning cloths, one wet and one dry, for your porcelain and shower screen. Floor wipes are great, but steam cleaner is effortless. a good plumber can change the taps over fairly eaisly if the original installation is done correctly even then there are ways of getting around problems that may arise. like I tell my friends it's not always good to go with the cheapest quote or get someone who has a good reviews and is well established within the trade. Good tradesman have the knowledge to deal with any issues and problems that may arise as well as the experience.

My favourites are: A semi-closed off shower and loo. I have a similar layout at home, though still completely different. When entering the space, you'll mainly see bath and sink. Or this one, which sprouted from the very first idea to place shower and bath in the same line. With two sinks your radiator should be hung elsewhere, inbetween windows made sense for heating reasons, but perhaps not the best spot aesthetically. (And I've moved the door to create a good spot for a tall storage unit.) So I've looked up some radiators that would be just fine next to the bath or inbetween sink and loo:

I don’t mind paying him to replace the trims ( if it’s even possible ) I just wish he had spoken To me about the trim being too big in places before he fitted as he did with most other issues. He did indeed run out of time, but quoted 2 weeks and worked 9 days in the end.

Im gutted every time I go in the en suite I see the defects :( the one corner of a trim doesn’t even meet the next and is filled with grout like I wouldn’t notice.

But it I wouldn’t pay him to sort the messy silicon nor the bad trim area is that fair ?
