What should I choose Handless or with handle in an open plan kitchen?
Comments (5)Hi There is true handleless and then there is a door with a 'J' groove at the top. The J groove door is pretty awful as the paint finish in the groove is always quite rough and opening an integrated fridge or dishwasher is more than awkward. A true handleless system with a channel fixed to the carcass is way better, much easier to use and you can pretty much choose any door material you like. Typically you only get the J groove door system from English kitchen manufacturers and the fixed channel system from German made kitchens. CK...See MoreWhat do you think of open plan bathrooms?
Comments (65)I'm looking to renovate the ensuite of my 2 bed flat and came across photos of open plan bathrooms. Some of the photos look great and I'm considering it as I don't have much room to work with in the bathroom and my bedroom has room I can use. I'm looking at moving the basin into the bedroom area, which would free up space for a bath and shower. I was thinking of making the basin look less bathroom-y and more like a makeup desk using wood and soft furnishing and a full length mirror. The rest of the bathroom would be behind a wall (no door). Main problem is that the door to the bedroom will open to the the basin (the rest of the bedroom is on the left), which I guess would put people off. I quite like the idea but I'm concerned it would put off potential buyers (more so after reading the comments). Should I stick with a traditional ensuite? I can put a bath and shower in there but I think it would be too cramped or I can loose the bath and have more room with just a shower. What do you think?...See MoreWhat should we do with our garden? Or should we leave it?
Comments (6)Thanks sksj1, I didn't realise this could be done. We haven't managed to get a configuration that works for us yet and the outward bifold doors stops us putting the dining table under the covered area as you have to move the whole lot out of the way each time you open the bifolds. Will explore this further. Thanks....See MoreShould we remove wall to create open plan kitchen living room?
Comments (16)Hi! I studied architecture in Edinburgh! If this is not your longterm home and ensuring return on investment is important to you then I recommend getting some sketch designs and talking them through with local estate agents who are familiar with the local housing market. You could show them a couple of options and get their opinion on which is likely to get the higher resale value, or which is likely to sell quickest - sometimes you don't get a lot more money but it's a configuration that is more sought after so it sells faster, which can also be a benefit when you come to sell. Most of the work I do is creating more open plan living, this is the general trend and has been for the last 20 years or so. I redesigned my Edinburgh flat to have an open plan kitchen dining lounge and it sold for the highest price achieved in that tenement or that street, though I did get lucky selling at the height of a market bubble at the time. I have a free Design Your Home Vision Checklist that is a good place to start with a home redesign: https://www.i-architect.co.uk/dyhvchecklist.html Good luck with your project!
