The trees are roof trained London Planes (Platanus hispanica). They are a large street tree which we have trained to a finished height of 2.3m

I’ve never seen anything like it, and I love plants! I’m guessing it is an exotic plant that maybe doesn’t grow well in the uk? If you don’t get much joy on here, you could always email the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) and see if they can identify it, or email Kew Gardens?

You could plant trees at the bottom of the garden, but make sure there are no paths or buildings on the other side of the fence as root growth can damage them (I speak from experience!). Also plant them well within your garden, not on the fence line as they will intrude into your neighbours garden too much. The trees you choose need to be tall enough to grow above the dip to provide cover. Trees like Mountain Ash (Sorbus), Ornamental Cherries (Prunus) and Amelanchier. Avoid forest trees like Birch, Oak or Beech which grow enormous. Pleached trees give a modern feel, but they are quite pricey as they have to be trained that way. They also need trimming each year otherwise they will revert to their natural shape and size. Another thing you could try is a pergola just below your garden steps, say on the left hand side, looking at the house. Their height often helps to give some privacy and you can grow plants up it like roses, honeysuckle and jasmine. You can create a shady seating area under it. The trees below are Mountain Ash, Cherry and Amelanchier.

Hi Chris, You've had a lot of good advice given to you already! Just a couple of considerations to bear in mind: You dont necessarily need to have a screen by the rear fence (as you are planning to have an outbuilding there, which will already be private and covered anyway). You can screen the areas that you want more privacy in (usually your seating areas) with screening around it. And in this case, screening can take many forms: a pergola with climbers on top, small trees or other plants such as bamboo. Bamboo is great as it gives you a lot of height without occupying a huge area. BUT THEY ARE INVASIVE! So make sure that you get a clumping variety (as was already said here) AND also make sure that you plant them with a suitable barrier at least 1m deep in the ground around their rhyzome system, as even the clumping ones, if planted on the ground without barriers can spread to your immediate neighbour (another alternative would be to plant them in big troughs and not on the ground). And yes, pleached trees do require a degree maintenance to keep their shape (as was already mentioned here). In London it is very probable that you are in heavy clay soil area. In this case, it is very important to be careful with planting trees very close to the house because their roots are more prone to cause subsidence than in other soils.
