farrow & ball, little Greene, mylands paint

My local paint shop will mix up f&b colours in either little Greene or mylands paint to make them more hard wearing however I want to know do you still get the same depth of colour with the other brands?

I have little Greene colours in my kitchen and bathroom and although they’re beautiful colours they don’t change with the light like the f&b colours do. The f&b shaded white in my hallway can look cream, green or grey depending on the light- would this still happen if it was mixed by one of the other brands?

I would love to hear from anyone that’s tried it or has more experience of the other paints. Thanks.

That's a tough one - some paint companies can match better than others. I have done this for clients and I ask the paint shop to recalibrate their machine before mixing my paint...it takes a couple minutes (they may not be happy about it) but it will ensure you get the closest color match that the shop can create. I'm not convinced that Farrow and Ball colours 'change' with the light any more than other paints. I also think that Little Greene and Paint and Paper library have much better quality paint (two coats rather than F&B three coats) and their colour ranges are better. F&B are often too green or too yellow whereas LIttle Greene and P&P have better neutrals.

Morning, From what you have said, I would go for James White which has green undertones rather than yellow understones like the White Tie. James White is fine for Exterior Masonary and you will see that option when you purchase. I would then pair that with the French Grey for the front door/woodwork. This is a classic colourway of theres specifically made for outside woodwork. It's the one you see on small pretty cottages. The colours works well with the James White and sits beautifully outside. Any colours with greener undertones will work better outside as they will harmonise better with the other colours from nature and not look so out of place when aging or getting slightly dirty with time. Ive just put ammonite on the exterior walls (another £5 tester pot!) and its more of a true grey than the bone white from fired earth (which has blue undertones). The shaded white looks beige next to it and so shaded white is out. Ammonite is in the lead. I'm hoping its not so pale that it looks dirty white and is grey enough that the old upvc windows still stand out next to it.

Hello Harriet, Yes I suggest this method of painting at half height, without the addition of beading in the form of dado a lot. I love this and, if you don't have it, you don't need it.. With regards to the height you need to go, it depends on the height of the ceiling in the space considered. So it could be dado height which is roughly the top of the back of a chair but could easily be much higher depending on my next point that compliments Minnie's.. Also depends on whether you want to do the same for picture rail or lack thereof... So you could actually use 3 colours and the top where picture rail would go take this colour up to and over the ceiling.. So there's choice between how many colours.. I also like to include all the woodwork and so again there's a variety of ways.. The same or a shade or two lighter or darker than wall colour.. Take into account the flooring and size of the space as this too will help you decide what and how much.. If you want less contrast work with shades of the same palette, that way you achieve a look with less contrast which you may find easier to deal with.. You can also use the same with the idea of skirting or lack thereof... Pictured.. It's a dark interior but you can see the principle can be applied in a variety of ways.. : ))

Hey Jen, I'm still paralysed by indecision on the blinds/curtain front! Making do with the white roller blinds for now - but as the rest of the room comes together they look more and more shabby :(. Managed to choose a rug and some prints for above the bed frame so I'm making progress at least. Will post an update when the wardrobes are finished. If you're anywhere near London I'll let you know the company I'm using if they prove to be good. I think price-wise its reasonable for the slightly complicated design (having to work around an awkward narrow chimney). I've heard mixed things about the F&B paints - most of the negatives from decorators I've read has been about the wall paints rather than the eggshell designed for woodwork. It's too expensive for me to indulge most of the time but on a comparatively small area like this I think its probably worth splashing out. I've heard good things about Little Greene too and there's a shop pretty close to the F&B one on Marylebone High St so will look at both.

I think anything will change with a change in light.

Funnily enough I was looking at this myself this week. I've chosen F&B colours for the exterior but want to use LG paint re quality and coverage. I've only got as far as ringing Kent Blaxill ATM but my local one doesn't have a scanner for the LG machine. I did read a professional article a couple of years ago saying LG could match F&B extremely well but I can't find the article again so that's not terribly helpful..

I wonder if it’s just down to the colours? I used to have FB Bone in my kitchen which would appear to be different colours in different light however I’ve now got LG French Grey which doesn’t change. Is it down to the underlying tones in the paint? I agree that now I’ve discovered LG paint I much prefer to use it as the coverage is fantastic but I find it more difficult to choose the right colour- the paint descriptions don’t help!

It's all down to light, nothing else at all. A paint will have its 'hue' which means the actual colour it is such as yellow green etc, but light changes everything. Plus, artificial light changes everything again. It's so darn complicated!
