May I enquire as to the species of the yellow tree?

Hello, what a beautiful shrub? Tree? Great choice in this space. Just beautiful? Do you know if it attracts pollinators? Thank you?

Thank you for your inquiry. This is a Desert Museum Palo Verde tree (Parkinsonia x 'Desert Museum'). It is a great desert tree & works beautifully in many spaces for filtered shade & aesthetic reasons. They tend to bloom from spring through summer and attract a variety of pollinators, including bees.

That's a sapling. Over time the bole will get much thicker and the surface roots will get beyond where the fence is now - but the fence won't last that long. Maturity for this tree is many years away. As the tree will be far prettier than the fence, why sacrifice it anyway? The beautiful mature bark alone will make it worth caring for. Something I can never quite grasp is why it is assumed, whether or not a plant is poisonous, any part of it is ever going to be eaten, even by mistake? For heaven's sake, are we becoming so neurotic we are about to cut and burn everything some half-witted scribbler tells us is poisonous? Even if true (it is but that is beside the point), what are the chances that even a child is going to be tempted to taste it? Earth certainly. Well, my kids tried when very small. Worms, maybe. Slugs or spiders possibly. But even the lowest leaves of any such plant are out of reach. Sleep easy. Leave the tree alone.

Hi Ellie It could be a number of things to best honest. Looking at your photo I am assuming it is indoors. The first thing to say is that one of the commonest reasons for plants to go yellow and drop leaves is over-watering. I would suggest that you carefully check if the soil is moist before you water, and not just at the surface, perhaps stick your finger in a bit and see how wet the soil is further down. I am also assuming that you haven't changed its position so is has less light. Yucca's come from sunny climes, so it will want to get a good amount of light, but not direct strong sun or you may get some browning of the leaves. My other main thought is that all evergreen plants do drop their leaves, its just they don't drop them all at once. So it can be entirely normal to loose a few leaves from time to time as they just get old. That said it sounds like you feel your plant is looking more unhappy than that. The other thing to consider then, as it is a year older, is does it need some fresh soil/feeding/ or even re potting? It is likely that it has been in the same soil for nearly 2 years now and that the soil is exhausted and not a large enough volume to support the plant. If you can get someone to lift the plant up you can gently tap the pot off and you may find a mat of congested roots and very poor looking soil. When re-potting don't go crazy on getting a hugely bigger pot, just large enough for 3-5cm of new soil to go down the sides of the plant and some new on the bottom. Any good multi-purpose compost should do, make sure you press it well down in the new pot so the roots are in good contact with it, and hopefully your Yucca will brighten up.

On the sunny side you could try Ceanothus an evergreen shrub with blue flowers, dwarf Lilac, Hibiscus shrub with large pink or purple flowers, Cistus and of course roses and Clematis. At the front of them you can plant lavender, hardy Geraniums, Erigeron, Campanula and Hemerocallis but there are hundreds of perennials you can choose. Just check they like sun and the height. Sometimes adding something taller at the front can add interest. On the shady side try Acers, Acer palmatum dissectum is gorgous. Fatsia japonica is evergreen but despite its exotic looks it’s hardy. Viburnums do well in the shade too and have lovely white flowers in spring. Climbing hydrangea is lovely and self clings to the fence. Then at the front try hardy Geraniums (they grow anywhere!), ferns, Dicentra spectabilis. For spring colour you have bulbs - daffodils and tulips for the sunny side and snowdrops and aconites for the shady side. Again there are loads, just check if they like sun or shade.
