1960s / 1970s Extension dilemma - no bricks! render or clad?

We're currently going through a double garage rebuild and kitchen extension. Our builder can't find anything that matches our heavily textured multi orange / autumnal bricks...his suggestion is a completely different red plain brick - I fear that will look cheap and nasty and not improve the overall look of the house.

For the front (garage)

We're considering render or cladding the garage, has anyone seen anything similar?

Our porch is white clad currently but needs replacing so we could match this to the new garage external. I had planned a sectional garage door and modern front door, perhaps in anthracite or a pale grey but not sure how this will work with cladding? perhaps too many horizontal lines? I had previously attempted some mock-ups so those are below too.

For the back (kitchen extension)

Thinking we just make to whatever the garage decision is.

I am keen to keep the look midcentury modern but our roof (plus plan for a half-hip new garage roof makes that a little tricky.

Also just to add complication we already have a slightly different brick on the sides of our house (photo below)

In the Netherlands most brick houses look like your brick. Baked clay? Could you and the builder just try a little harder to find them?

Personally i'd say, if you're going to such lengths with a new garage, extension possibly the porch etc, which is a lot. I would render the whole front of the house and garage to tie the whole project together. However, you can't see much of the brick of the garage on the front, just the piers.

Looking closely at them, I think the garage brick was slightly different to the main house and wonder if it was already an addition? Also, if you look at the bricks above the line of where the garage has come down, the top bricks are a different colour to the bottom. So 1, 2 & 3 are all different colour bricks. 1 and 2 are very similar, but to me there is a subtle difference as 1 doesn't contain any darker bricks and is very slightly brighter red.

Hi John, We would always suggest external insulation rather than internal insulation, where you have the option, because as John Botham states there is a real risk of interstitial condensation, and potential mould and damage to the structure. If you do need to do it internally be careful not to add to much and ensure it is fitted carefully without gaps and with a good vapour barrier - especially around electric sockets etc. if you use a product such as Kingspan. It is also vital that you return the insulation in around the windows, this makes significant differences to overall performance and the risk of condensation and mould at this point, though this insulation can be thinner. We often recommend a breathable insulation such as Pavadentro when internal insulation is required, as this allows the moisture to come in and out of the wall. Careful detailing at internal wall junctions, floors and roof are also needed, along with good airtightness sealing, while you are doing it. Putting a price on external insulation is difficult as it depends on many factors, such as needing to move down pipes, extending eaves etc, along with thickness and type of insulation. A good render, installed correctly should last many years without the need for any maintenance and can perform to a much higher standard than internal. Hi Ella Heres a quick doodle / suggestion if money wasnt an object its bit of a radical departure from whats there at present but this layout provides you all the accommodation that you need and will give you a fantastic house that embraces the back garden more fully What i propose is extending to either side of the front bay to create extra bedrooms/bathrooms/storage and moving the entrance to the centre of the plan (not too dissimilar to Johnathonb suggestion) and combining the 3 rooms at the rear into one be family space. I have deliberately sited the new entrance opposite the dining room so that you see through this and out to the rear garden as soon as you enter the house - always a nice feature Ideally you would remove the pitched roof from the front bay and have one long coherent elevation combining the two extensions and the existing walls. You could have a flat roof or pitched roof over this. Anyway - food for thought!

I think that if his house sits well but will benefit from tlc. I agree that the front door needs to be more prominent- a over sized path and planting that sweeps to the front door will help. Rendering the whole house may push the budget too far but perhaps just the lower section might be a good compromise. I would be careful about replacing these windows with anything too plain as then the house could look bland. As long as every section of every window matches the others in the front then it will be cohesive and look well finished

Thanks all for really helpful comments. It's great to have some input on this. I feel there is so much advice for the casual enthusiast in mainstream media in terms of interior decoration, but not so much for dated house fronts! Is the idea of actually taking up the front slabs and putting down soil/compost to plant flowers/climbers a bad one? I suppose large pots are much less permanent, but I wonder if they would like a bit 'busy'. Kia Design - What kind of material does the clip on cladding come in? Is it a permanent feature, or just come off if/when needed? Dale Loth Architects- I'm interested in your comment on the original design of the door and sidelight. If budget wasn't an option, what would you advise here?

I recently built an extension to a house that I owned of a similar age to yours. The extension was rendered although the builder made the mistake of using a standard grey product which required painting, which was a pain in the neck as the render was stippled.

There are a lot of options of coloured renders available which you can find in your local commercial builder's merchants and this removes the need to painting it.

I would also question where your builder is correct about the brick and whether he has bothered to look anywhere other than his local builder's merchants. There is a very large variety of brick colours available and some research on the internet might help you find what you need if the brick finish is your preference.
