Still not 100% sure what to do for window coverings for our bedroom (and another which is exactly the same) each room has 2 windows.....we’ve been undecided for 2 years. We are seriously considering plantation shutters with wide Louvres. Do you think it will look ok (going to do white) How “dark” will it be? I realise they won’t be full blackout but it needs to be pretty dark for these lovely light mornings and nights that we get in the summer. At the moment I’m waking up at 5.30 and it’s not good....! Heat is also a big issue....wed keep them closed on sunny days as it’s boiling Hot otherwise....atbEaster our room was 32 degrees C with no heating on!

I’ve had one quote but want to get a couple more (we are North Dorset).

Shutters are lovely. They won’t provide complete black out but the wider the slat the better. Try a local blind company for a price, most shutters all come from the same few factories in China anyway.

Our loft room suffers from the same heat problem. Eventually and it's not a permanent solution we opted for a portable air conditioner to suck the hot air out of the room and pump it out of an open window. We also open the door and the window to try and create a through draft, but it's not ideal.

You could of course try a permanently situated air conditioning unit which would help enormously.

I like the idea of the shutters!

I looked in to this a little further. As far as I can tell, you can't buy a product called a shutter door. You can buy shutters for doors. They do not fit all types of door as obviously being something that's surface mounted, they could impede the door opening and shutting. They can be fitted to French Doors and some patio doors, it depends on the type of opening. I'm not sure you will be able to afix them to bi-folds as the doors will not be able to push across flat due to something sitting on their surface. You can buy shutters on track systems to be used as wardrobe doors and room dividers, however, obviously they have no glass in them, so the argument that I first posted comes in to question about heat loss. Maybe you could contact one of the companies that supply them and find out if it's possible first:- Plantation Shutters

Honestly I wood (haha) go for the MDF - from a price point of view of course they are more desirable, but as a material they are still hardwearing and versatile. They have a lovely smooth finish (although if you are looking for a traditional 'wood' look then you won't get the grain/knots with it) - I think the only limitation you might come across would be colour choice as they're usually more limited in MDF but other than that, if you really like both then why not go for the lower cost option and put the rest towards other things? :)
