Hi allSo the builders are about to come in any day now and build our 2m wide by 6m long patio.I'm having last minute nerves! The plan is to place, all on one end, a 3 seater sofa (75cm depth) and a (95cm depth) chair in front of the sofa - I've drawn it out and it seems to work on paper!I just want to hear the reality from you guys and if anyone has a 2m deep patio please let me know how you find it re placing furniture for conversation.For the patio table (on the other end) I am leaving 70cm space all around the chairs as I read that's the space you should leave.Many thanks!

Hi 1stgarden, my decking area near the house is about 6m wide by 2.5m depth, so much the same as your proposed patio. I wish mine could have been more than 2.5m but the rest of the garden is raised, so digging it out would have been a hell of a job. I’m in a terrace so transporting the soil to a skip would have been no easy task! However, my neighbour has done this so their patio is about 3.5m and much better. If I was you I would make it wider, that is 3m or 4m, if you have the space.

I have a garden seat at either end, with a coffee table nearer one of the seats. Here’s some pics:

Agree with above. You really need 3m space for people to sit down and then have room to walk around with ease and not falling into the borders. The last thing you want is it to feel to cramped and cluttered.

Full width terraces never feel very nice as they form a hard dividing line across the garden, if you were to do two large interlocking squares diagonally across and plant into the negative spaces created it will feel more like two room, one for dining and one for lounging.

Just make sure that these are generous spaces as described above.

Hi. I agree with Karen and Emanuelle, it looks good and would wait. Are all the colours matched? The Wimborne looks true to colour to me but hard to tell from a pic! Have the walls been painted already? If you don't like it once finished look at wevet (doesn't have a cream undertone) or cornforth White ( look at kitchen images combined with raisins/downpipe) rather than ŵalls or purbeck stone. This is purbeck with railings or will be when I can post a pic!

Hi Jen, good idea re the laundry - it would nicely "segregate" that functional space and open up all the rest as bathroom space. If you go that route, just check with a plumber that you don't cause any knock on issues with running a soil pipe from the back of the WC to the main soil stack (you really don't want those issues!!), and then make sure you do it in a way that doesn't lose light from that window. Regarding custom mirrors - the cheapest way is to get a local glazier to quote to make and install. Assuming it is just a single plain sheet you are looking for, the cost should not be too bad at all. Definitely get the glazier to install - it pays to leave the risk on their side, and they are experienced in handling the material. I've had a few bespoke glass splashbacks go "pop" on me, and there are few worse feelings... For what is a relatively piece of glass, make sure that there are no access issues to get it into the room (awkward bends round stairs or the like), or consider doing it in a couple of pieces. And if you are concerned about getting the best price, ask a couple of people to quote and look online too. And don't be afraid to haggle nicely - any glazier will try and squeeze a little extra margin if they can, so try and get it back! Try the online pricing tool at mirrorfit.co.uk for a quick feel of cost, or any of the other tools online.

Ah Ribena, sorry to not update before! I think I am still a little traumatised :-) I gave the carpenter strict instructions to do the final room in a staggered format. He even laid out a couple of rows and I was certain he understood what I meant. Then to my horror I saw the job later when he had done 2/3 and the joins were in alignment again!!! Not every other row as before but every third. My heart sank and I had to get him to redo it the next day, and I am the one who has to foot this mistake! I wasted close to £160 for an extra day of labour. He has redone it although there are some pattern repeats right next to each other! He works for a friend of my family so it is awkward. I have covered over the joins in the other bedroom with rugs but I still dislike it. He said it would probably take him half a day to redo it so another £80. Really not sure which way to go Also after all that, I am not sure I like the laminate anyway which is really frustrating, wish I had the budget to have gone for engineered wood. I chose a smooth Quick Step (Impressive range so around £21 a sq m) in oak to try and match the look of real parquet I have in the hallway. Wish I had got a more pronounced grain now! Now wondering what style of rug can put down to soften it. Have a kingsize in there and wondering whether to put two separate rugs down side or one large one underneath? Sorry, you did ask!!!

Thank you both so much for your responses and the pics forzaitalia :)))

However I really can't go beyond 2m deep (Even to 2.5m)! I have 2 rugrats 7 and 5 and the remaining lawn left after the proposed patio is 5m and that just about gives them enough space to have a small sand / water table, paddling pool etc and enough space to run around and chase eachother (their favourite outside "game"). So I feel ultra guilty eating up more into their lawn/run around space.

AGI due to the same principle of having the mamaximum amount of uninterupted lawn space left for the kids, I probably won't be able to do the interlocking squares idea (though I love the thought of it)!

It's sorta hard having the garden as the grown up space I want it to be whilst knowing I need it kid friendly at the same time. I'm feeling a lot of guilt through all this... I wish we could all just have acres of land!!

I agree with you, the children’s needs come first. They will grow up and then you can do what you want lol! Once my neighbours kiddies left home, my neighbour radically changed her garden. It is stunning now. Good luck with it all, you just need to do what is right for you now. I’ve changed my garden no end of times! A garden is always evolving.

Thank you so much, purely just for easing my guilt! A garden is definitely something that evolves and yes for now we will aim for happy kiddies, *and* happy mummy with my little 2m deep patio :D but one day...

Is it bad I really want to see your neighbours garden; It's not like I'm encouraging you to take a sneaky pic or 2 though...

Hi @1stgarden. I wish we all had acres of land too! If you’ve planned it to scale out on paper then hopefully it should be ok. Ideally 3m or more would be more comfortable but as Forza says kiddies come first. Better to let them have their running space and hopefully not trash all the plants:) You could try laying out the dimensions of the furniture using cut out cardboard or plastic sheet to see if it’ll all fit. Our patio is about 3m wide but I have the habit of filling it with plant pots and currently a load of bricks ready for building a raised bed and hopefully another area for table and chairs....as mentioned, constantly evolving. I wish you all the best with your garden and keep us updated:).

Hi Rachel and thank you!

I did draw it all out to scale and it seems to work on paper; my problem is I want everything! I want the big lawn, I want the swinging chair, I want the canopy of forest plants, I want the romantic arbour with climbing roses filling it, I want the grand waterfall and I want the huge BBQ and 8 seater table which (in my fantasy) we'd use every weekend when hosting friends and family :)

My, that's a lot of I wants!!! :D (I sound like my 5 year old)

I will say I do believe a lot of the above is achievable if you get things to the correct scale of your space.. So I'll have to settle for a bistro table with 4 seats around it instead of my 8 seater magnificent dining table :)

Hi. We have just put up this decking area which is 2m wide... and the section in front of the large doors is 6m. As u can see it doesnt give tonnes of space for a recliner chair but we actually have a large patio area around the corrner so it didnt actually worry us as we just needed a platform outside the doors. But why not look for compact garden furniture which will give the feeling of space. Best of luck with your project.

Inside out furniture is sometimes good option for a smaller patio -ie if your furniture is usually inside - open up the patio doors and take it outside in the summer time if it’s indoor and outdoor grade - for small sofa or dining etc this leaves the area free most of the winter months, so keeps the feeling of space.

Well here’s my neighbours garden. Not a very good pic as I had to take it sneakily from an upstairs window! She has a patio, steps up to next level through an arch then the garden is layed out in an X formation - gravel path and an abundance of planting. Then another arch leading to greenhouse, garage and a bistro seating area.

Thank you thank you thank you gerty! Eek you're right, it is a little narrow but I'm sure I can make it work just like you have! I love the scale of your deck chair and how "light" it looks in terms of not being overly padded and 'fudsy'. Yep - did just make that word up and nope, can't define it. I know what it means in my head :D

One plan, how clever! I will get googling inside outside furniture right now :)

Hi, it would be good to know how you get access to the patio. Are there sliding patio doors? Outward opening patio doors? A kitchen door that opens outwards? And where that door/those doors are placed. Because they have impact on where you can place furniture.

There's plenty of outdoors furniture that will fit your patio. Even though I agree with the majority that 2 m is too narrow, I do get your reasoning. Even so, you can compromise. An extra metre where your seating or dining area is and then back to the 2 m could be a solution if you're still worried.

Anyway, think balcony. And a dining table with benches instead of chairs for example.
