hob arrangement

just wondering what your thoughts are on these hob and extractor options. the aim was to maximise space between hob and sink to its right whilst leaving enough space to left of hob. Option 1 does that. Option 2 looks more symmetrical and is the one proposed by the kitchen company.

Sorry, not answering your actual question, but your dining area doesnt seem to work, to me. 2m width wouldn't be a comfortable amount of room for the width of the dining table and to allow people to sit of both sides, and making sure nobody bashes the chairs into the glass doors!

I agree it's tight but it can encroach into the main kitchen space when chairs are pulled out (dotted line is an rsj above). The sliding doors are pocket doors through to living room and we are restricted to where that new wall can go.

Step 4: Finer details As you become clear on the demands you will be placing on your new kitchen make a wish-list of your preferred products and materials. From a practical perspective consider what you will require from you appliances, worktops, storage solutions and sink and tap. You may already have a look in mind of the kitchen in terms of colour, style and finish, but it’s a great idea to gather ideas from magazines or websites. Enjoy creating a scrap-book with cuttings of furniture, flooring, taps, even paint finishes, crockery or vases- anything that inspires you. Even just images with right ‘feel’. Step 5: Budget With a kitchen the cost of key elements such as appliances, units and worktops can vary dramatically. For instance, appliances may account for a considerable percentage of the total cost of the kitchen, however if branded top-end ovens, hobs and extractors are specified this percentage can escalate dramatically to become the most expensive element of the project. Similarly the choice of worktops materials and door material may increase the budget substantially. There may be areas of the project where you may have to be prepared to consider a compromise to stay within your budget. Step 6: Layout As a rule of thumb this will be dictated by the existing dimensions of you room, or you may be lucky enough to be planning to extend. If you are extending you amy wish to consider an open-plan kitchen to seamlessly link through to the living area. Whatever the shape there are clever design options that will ensure you can make the most of the space available to you. Even in a tight space a clever designer can still work miracles.

As others have stated above, the gas hob arrangement just isn't safe and it needs to be ideally 300mm from the edge. That would be the first thing i'd resolve before worrying about new hobs. I think you're looking at a new worktop for the island then depending on the base units and any built under appliances you could then have a new hob safely fitted. Most hobs upto 750 wide have a 560*490 cutout, 800 and above need a bigger cut out. The other issue you may have with a large gas hob is the gas supply pipe could be undersized for the new hob and your gas man might refuse to connect it. Induction hobs are brilliant but you do need suitable pans to use (and no one with a pacemaker). If you're worried about loosing the gas you could go with domino hobs, basically these are 300 wide hobs which have joining strips so you can make your own hob design and combine different cooking methods, not the cheapest hobs but could be more functional for you.

I’ve probably seen around 10 recessed hobs over the last month while kitchen shopping myself, although these have only been across two showrooms and all using Bora/Elica hobs (the likes of Wren and others don’t seem to flush mount in their displays). As far as I can remember they all used black sealant. I wouldn’t say it matters that the black contrasts the worktop as the hob is black anyway so it’s just a small extension of the hob colour. Also the actual sealant gaps that I’ve seen have been very minimal, and looks very sleek. I could also see a clear sealant working though as per Lifestyle’s post. Please post pics of the result as I’m looking to recess in the new kitchen in the near future!

Hi Jonathan, thanks for taking the time to look over the plan and my scribbles! The house is a traditional one and a half storey Scottish croft house. I didn't show the upstairs bit of the plan, because it will be unchanged. Upstairs there are 2 good sized bedrooms and a tiny box room, which is too small to be very useful. We need a 3rd bedroom for our teenage daughter, so creating an ensuite bedroom downstairs seems like a sensible way to reclaim a family bathroom! There doesn't seem to be anywhere else for the new family bathroom to go - the current bathroom is located in the room marked as a 'hall' on the plan. We've been going back and forth on possible ways to extend for some time - one option had been to break through the gable end wall from what is marked on the plan as a 'hall' into the stable, but this seemed to remove useful walls in both the stable and the 'hall'. The kitchen is currently in a very poorly built rear extension, which finishes approximately where the family bathroom on the plan finishes, and is accessed through the room that will become the downstairs bedroom. Perhaps this is why we don't feel that accessing the kitchen through the rear extension is an issue... Do you think we need to reconsider breaking through to the stable from the gable end wall? The roof overhang will incorporate a wood store. I'm hoping that the plans - as I've tweaked them - will give an arrangement in which the stable can fit a reasonable sized kitchen with a dining area which will give lovely views, and we can also position a sofa in the rear extension where there'll be a lot of light from a glass ceiling and end wall, and will still feel like part of the kitchen space. That's the idea - but with more knowledge and experience of buildings and plans, you may have better ideas - and I'd love to hear them! Thanks so much again for your thoughts.. A

300mm and 400mm is not wide enough for a decent bin. You need to allow more like 500mm especially if you’re planning on having a freestanding bin. Even the integrated 300/400 wide bins hold hardly anything.

I would also look at enlarging the Pan drawer set. 600 is a fair standard size but if you could stretch this to 800 it’s a far more accommodating width.

They have the whole layout wrong and it is not only dangerous, but it won't work well as a useable space. There is very little worktop/prep space. The oven and fridge open into a thoroughfare and no space to put hot items down as they are taken out of the oven. This is basic kitchen safety and I would scrap it and start again.
