Mixing wood colour in a kitchen

Hello,

we have an 8 year old house with a large L shaped kitchen/diner/ sunroom

The kitchen is Ivory shaker style with oak worktops & flooring

i want some new furniture for dining area & sunroom, do I need to stick with oak/ ivory??

at the moment it’s all a bit mismatched & I want to tie it all in.

I love my dining table which is teak & a darker wood, should I replace with oak & get sideboard, tv stand & coffee table to match or would it be too much oak???

help/ suggestions please

Your kitchen is so similar to mine and the same age! I have a painted pine table from The Cotswold Co and a pine sideboard as well as an oak worktop. My chairs are oak and a gift, so a right mish mash! None of mine matches as such, but I Like an eclectic look. If you want to get away from more wood, then I think something painted would look nice, say in a soft grey or beige. If you feel up to it you could paint the table you have? Are you wanting a traditional look or something more contemporary? Here’s mine, plus some ideas

I think you could do all sorts.

Sticking with Ivory and Oak is good, changing up chairs for ivory or another contrasting colour such as Turquoise or Mustard which both work well.

What other colours do you like and what else do they need to fit with ?

Very interesting comments Bagpuss, thank you. I guess its not too late to change the furniture order! I would have never thought to use ivory furniture so that's definitely something to think about and I'm all for bringing in more light. I am planning ivory furniture for our living room, hallway and bedroom too (I love ivory furniture), so thought we'd do something different in the dining room. The walls are light too (off white/ nearly ivory) - that's another issue as I'm not sure that colour is suitable or needs to be changed. I actually thought (hoped!) the Mango furniture would create a contrast with the flooring as opposed to a clash and there are some (albeit few) darker tones in the mango furniture that match the flooring so there is a bit of a connection (or so I thought). And it sounds like I'll definitely need to rethink the fireplace altogether!

Thanks ‘Man about the house’, we hope to house the boiler, but as it’s non-standard size (it’s a commercial sized boiler) we are exploring doing a bespoke cabinet with a standard door but this depends on the cost! I like the idea of a light and airy kitchen - will definitely explore this. For cabinet doors, am now thinking perhaps f&b ammonite coloured doors but worried that grey won’t be in fashion in a few years so perhaps looking at colours that are more classical/light such as f&b old white or James white. Currently testing these colours on our kitchen wall! Will post pictures when am home.

Hi, We are finally renovating our kitchen and would like some advice about installing 2 different types of kitchen worktops: granite and wood. We have a smallish J-shaped kitchen and with a separate laundry room which houses the fridge/freezer and washing machine. The style is classical/country cabinet doors in cream/mushroom colour and neutral walls. We have Moroccan style tiles which we installed when we first moved in to brighten up the kitchen, and we would like to retain these (picture included). For cost efficiency, we are considering brown or cream (can’t decide colour!) granite worktops across where the hob and sink will be situated and a dark wood across the 3rd worktop (sample plan attached). Most of the pictures of mix and match countertops on houzz/Pinterest etc seem to involve an island Or breakfast bar, neither of which we have enough space for. Thus would like your feedback on: Will differing worktops work or do they appear too disjointed in a smaller kitchen Advice on granite/quartz worktop colours that will work with the floor tiles. also any advice re: colour scheme for walls/splashback/cabinetry hardware/tiles would be appreciated. most of my kitchen toys ie food processor/kettle/toasrer are grey/black, and the hob/oven/microwave are likely to be grey/black so doesn’t really match with a traditional/country style kitchen! I think you've been given bad advice by the wood staining company. I have a wooden worktop in one of my rentals, so, I need to make that look good every time someone new moves in. It's a standard wood block worktop. It used to be a pale to mid tone colour. I decided that it would look a little more contemporary to go dark to match new flooring that I put in. I washed it down with meths to start with to remove as much of the old stain as possible and then let it dry for a couple of days. I then sanded it back down ( not easy around the sink, but do'able ). I then put on a new dark stain and oil, Osmo tint ( Terra ). Sorted and looks great. It was originally this colour, then faded due to the glass roof:- This is it sanded back, re-tiled and prepped:- As you see it's much lighter. It then got stained and oiled twice:- I must confess, that Mrs Math did the brunt of that project, she did all the tiling and stain / oil, I just did a bit of sanding one day and then went off to another job. Well done Mrs Math!

Ooh thanks, the wallpaper in the sunroom & dining area is Laura Ashley with the sage green colour in it, I am wanting to change the wallpaper at some point but do like sage green, other than that it’s pretty neutral. It’s whether I can mix the wood colour that was bothering me most. Love my dining table but is Teak, so quite a bit darker than the oak, wasn’t sure if to go with oak furniture & replace table or keep it & go with darker furniture, love the coloured chair idea though xx

Also really like the county cottage look, it’s a new ish house but didn’t want to go too modern xx
