What colour to accent the room??

Hey everyone :) a design question for you here! I’ve just painted my dining room a warm graphite colour, relatively dark. It’s a warm grey colour and the furniture is a combination of white painted wood and wood stained in a mid grey but with brown tones coming through. Pictures of the wall below :)

Two questions for you!

1) what recommendations would you have on curtain colour. I was thinking textured light cream.

2) what accent colour do you think would work well in this room. I.e colour for vases, flours, pictures, cushions etc just to break up the greys.

Cheers Chris :-) it’s a bit out there in places, some bits I’m going to change but on the whole it’s 90% there :-)

Ohh.... the orange idea with the dark grey! Great choice, as you have seen, I like orange! Lol

Personally I’m not sure about the curtains. I think a white might sit better- the trouble with cream is that in electric light it can look yellow.

Your room is looking lovely! I can’t decide whether there is stained glass in the smaller window or if it is shrubs outside? If it is the former your hands are a little tied. If it isn’t the world is more or less your oyster. I personally love copper with dark grey - not necessarily this particular fabric but you can see where I’m coming from

Nice contrasting opinions here. Green is definitely a colour that can comfortably remain current through each season. Whereas yellow does make you think of spring or even summer. The yellow does jump out at you though! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Just a thought, we could also have lights made in your choice of colours. For example these could be made in F&B colours. We have loads more styles. This is a burnt orange but we can do any F&B colour. Bespoke paint will add a little to the cost but it's worth it for a completely unique kitchen. I prefer the yellow chair. The only thing I would be wary of if you need 2 chairs Is that it often works better if there’s a proportional split of colour. There‘s a design rule which states 60% primary colour , 30 % secondary and 10% accent. There are variations to that but my point is I’m not sure 2 chairs would work as well with the sofa. Is there a chair that matches your sofa or perhaps show more of the room?

I had considered white too so that’s a good option!

The colour on the windows are from the shrubs outside, the pictures got a bit pixelated when they uploaded. The windows are lead lined but have no colour aside from a very small coloured rose flower motif at the top but I don’t think that need impact the colours in the room :)

I think keeping the curtains a similar colour to walls will be very elegant. As far as accessories go there are so many shades that will look good eg mustard, teal, blue etc, and copper, or brass, will look amazing with the grey. On my screen the walls look a little green? Still gorgeous. Great that your furniture is white. It will create a lovely contrast. Here’s a couple of ideas

White curtains rather than cream, and how about coral and turquoise accent - I noticed your stained glass had turquoise in it so it would tie the scheme together.

I’d go white or grey as suggested, I’ve painted my living room a very similar shade to yours, I like it but I’m struggling with a sandstone fireplace clashing with lots of things in the room! So much so I’m thinking of painting the room white or painting the fireplace an even darker grey or satin black!

To sum up, stay away from cream with this shade of grey is my advice!

I have recently bought yellow velvet cushions from IKEA just to try the colour with the grey walls and I am absolutely in love with it, they are very cheap try it. I think any citrus colour is nice and refreshing with grey but in moderation.

Love the Blush sofa in the last of OnePlan's pics..........beautiful.

I think that colour and a good plush texture like velvet will work amazingly well.

Teal velvet curtains would look lovely, if such a thing exists. In my opinion there is enough white in the room, teal or emerald would really lift it.

Just one other thing, I’d think about painting the panelled radiator the same colour as the wall, the other cast look rad is nice as it has some character about it, this is mine painted, I’m going to replace it this a cast iron princess on though!

The colour orange is meant to make you hungry so perfect in a dining room and great against the grey - especially a touch of orange velvet!

Thank you @peggysue67 :-) the decor is a bit different in places but it me and I really love all things interiors, sometimes the stranger the better! I bought the chair in Italy while on holidays last year and had it shipped home! Fell in love as soon as I seen it as I’d never seen the likes of it before, as always the photo really doesn’t do it justice I feel, most comfortable chair I’ve ever sat in.

The chair is from an italian brand called paola lenti, they have lovely furniture :-)

Hi Chris. I went for a very similar dark grey in my dining room too and opted for pale ivory damask curtains. Only reason I went for ivory is that the white gloss on the architraves and dado rail has yellowed over the years so they matched quite well...and they were a sales bargain:) To be fair I only did a quick tart up hence not refreshing the woodwork. Your dining room gets a lot more light than mine and there’s a lot of green reflected from the plants outside so considering your furniture I might opt for a very pale washed linen for a natural soft look or if you want to be brave with colour I think a dupion silk or velvet can look very opulent. I think there are lots of colours that could work well. I like the jewel colours like teal or emerald green, fuschia pink or burnt orange, perhaps yellow even. I opted for a natural green as an accent colour in our dining room, seemed to work well with the charcoal grey and ivory. Here’s some more inspo pics:

Burnt orange gets my vote!
