Windows Design Dilemma

bedroom window covering question

Hi, about to move into a barn conversion with amazing views. Windows are huge and wooden framed triple glazed. Thick walls. Want to have black out in bedrooms but nothing to infringe on the views out at all (especially at the top of some of the windows where the view is long). Any ideas on what to go for?? Pictures are a few of the windows.

I think the most unobtrusive window blackouts are usually roller blinds. They block out the light for sleeping, but roll up almost into a tube in the day, so wont obstruct your views. The look can be softened with curtains, but make sure they do not obstruct the window when opened by ensuring the rail is wide enough, so the curtains pull back past the windows. Like this:

What about roman blinds, installed outside the recess?
We have those in all our bedrooms, installed high above the windows so that, when opened, we have the full window and it doesn’t stop either light or view.
It just need to be measured properly when ordering to be higher up than usual.

It may not work for your last tall window though - maybe more conventional curtains with a longer curtain pole to ensure full opening on this one?
Even if different blind/curtains, having the same fabric would create harmony.

Gone through my album of our very own decorating therapy journey and found these. I hope you can see the roller black-out in the first photo, it's tucked inside the recess of the window. The Duette is a peachy colour which looks a lot lighter colour in the north-facing sun. The one in the five panel window is the room below, it does not have the roller blind but the curtains are black out. They are not as efficient in blocking out light as the roller in recess though. the curtains are from Hamilton McBride, only reason i got them were because not many wide (350cm) curtains are cheaply available on Amazon... If your room is not too cold, you can also consider wooden venetian, mine is in white colour as you can see from the 'blue room' (it's F&B's new Vardo btw), which is on the ground floor of the north facing side. 247 does oak colour too. Many neighbours asked us where we got those from!! They look great at a good price - those two windows cost me just under a £100 - but they are not the most energy efficient. They are okay blocking out light but if you have it in the south-facing room, it might not be quite enough. Do go to 247blinds and request some free samples, it's worth a try. Hope this helps! ;)

Is the bedhead up against the window, or are all the nets for effect? The side ones need to come down as they're spoiling the clean lines. Is there any way of configurng the room so that the bed doesn't go under the window? I presume that the headboard is higher than the window sill. Can you draw the room?

Design Dilemma for Bedroom Bay Window in Victorian House

Hi, I live in a Victorian house too with a bay - and had a similar dilemma. Someone on a forum recommended a company in Wales (I think!) that make lovely iron curtain poles - so that’s what we did, and we’ve never looked back!! The company have a (basic) website - it explains how to measure (you have to do several measurements which they then use to ensure a perfect fit!). The pole arrived as one solid piece that was bent at all the right places. We chose a gorgeous white with simple small white balls as the finals. You can choose different thicknesses of pole too. It’s attached to the wall with 3 fittings - one in the middle and one at each end. In theory we could have just two wide curtains on it, but in reality we chose to hang 4 curtains - one on each end and one in each corner to pull across the back. We went for white as we didn’t want the heavy look of the black poles - our house had those when we moved in and we wanted something a bit different and more neutral. We hung light white curtains to start with but currently have a heavy dark grey velvet. Both looked great with the pole as it’s very unobtrusive. I can’t remember the cost but I do remember it being cheaper than I was expecting - more than Ikea (!!) but less than John Lewis - and it’s totally bespoke and one one solid pole. A blind fitted outside the recess. Then you get the advantage of the views when they’re rolled up.

Hey Tara

How about some shutters? You can have these installed into the recessed so the thickness of the shutter itself is about 2cm, which will open and sit against the wall, with no obstruction to your view, but will provide complete blackout when closed. (Lots of example on Pinterest.)

Another option may be to have full floor to ceiling length curtains on a runner, this would look fab and really elevate the window.

Blackout romans would be good. I have them in my living room, the only thing I would suggest which I have seen above is that having them inside the niche does hinder the view a little as they don't go up as far as a roller blind, so secure them outside the niche.
