hardscape border

What has been used as the hardscape border here? is it poured concrete or some type of paver that can be bought? Love it.

The edging/border in this project is cast in place concrete with a steel troweled finish.

A similar effect could be achieved with narrow modular concrete paver, mortared in place, say 4" x 36" x 2.5". Stepstone Inc. and other manufacture this product in a variety of lengths.

A beautiful and relatively cheap way to disguise it and frame the approach to the front door is to use Portuguese laurel. It is like the green box hedging that is commonly seen except that it isn't poisonous to dogs and cats (unlike the green box hedging) and it flowers. It can be bought at various heights and it needs very little maintenance. The stems would match your front door and windows and it would also offer a degree of privacy depending on its height. Here is some info from a website: The Portuguese Laurel, Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia, makes a beautiful formal hedge. It's dark foliage against maroon coloured stems creates a striking contrast whilst flowers and berries provide interest for wildlife such as birds and bees. Portuguese Laurel hedging features ◾Foliage: Evergreen, glossy, dark green leaves ◾Features: White flowers and winter berries. Thanks very much Pete_bon! Very important indeed that i take the aspect and soil type in to account and can only imagine there's a lot more to this process than drawing some pretty pictures. I embarked upon this i guess as a doodling exercise whilst awaiting the garden designer of my 'inspiration garden' to get in touch. I thought such an expert would be best placed to advice on the hardscaping but especially on the planting (after doing a site visit to my south-west facing garden on the westerly outskirts of London). However given that i'm still waiting (as i said already i'm impatient) and that i'm quite taken with the design JonathanB suggested, i reckon as far as hardscaping goes i'm actually seriously considering that layout. However given that i don't have a clue about plants or what goes where the suggestions on here are invaluable so I imagine i'll use this in conjunction with a gardener who can advise and come up with a planting plan for my actual garden. I'd never heard of the Beth Chatto Gardens before so just been having a look at their wonderful website, the gravel gardens you mention are particularly great and really does prove that with careful consideration there are lots of beautiful plants for each and every location. I'll take on-board your advice on height and on climbers in particular and am sure as long as things are 'strategically' placed i'll love their unruliness !

Bearing in mind that you have young children, the focus of the garden in my opinion should be on them. A small patio/dining/relaxing area for adults near the house, and perhaps also at the end of the garden would be lovely. I would also have most of the garden redone in grass (real grass!) with room to play. And I would keep the fence... its the most practical having children near a river, even if they're not babies anymore. I would probably break up the unusual shape of the garden with a few pots, planters and borders 'sticking' out into the garden so the eye is drawn away from the sharp, narrow end. I agree with what was said above though about just living with the space for a bit and seeing how you use it.

I think we'd all love a gardener to do all the laborious jobs, lawn mowing, hedge trimming and so on:) in answer to the 'no dig' method, it does work but it still means you have to hand pick the weeds when they show up. Another method is to cover the planting area with plastic sheeting which does the same job as weed control fabric and bark chips but tbh is uglier. There are seeds that you can sow which will look nice, improve the soil and then can be dug down the following year providing essential nutrients.
