Uneven Ceilings Hide with Faux Beams?

Hello everyone! We are doing a home remodel and we are opening up our space to an open concept. We discovered today that the rafter sizes in 3 sections of the house that will now be once big section are different sizes, leading to what could potentially be (if we did nothing), 3 ceiling heights. Note that this is a vaulted ceiling across the entire space.

The contractor recommends we demo the existing ceilings, extend the rafters, and re-insulate to bring them to the same height. However this might be cost prohibitive.

Saw some ideas online about hiding this defect using exposed decorative faux beams on the seams to hide the flaw. What are people's take? Has anyone done this? Is this a dumb idea? What questions should we be asking?

It's not a dumb idea, but I suggest that you think about your goals. Do you want a quick and inexpensive fix? Do you want something that's going to pass the time test, i.e., more than five years? Faux beams could solve your problem, but they could also call attention to the problem if they look "faux," i.e., don't fit with your home's architecture or structural layout. You may need to consult with a professional designer for input, to help you make informed decisions about what to do. Good luck!

Are there any other reasons that taking down the ceiling would make some sense, like electrical work, lighting, HVAC?

Could some or all of the disparity be addressed by adding strapping & another layer of drywall?

Missmjbs I totally understand your angst, and here's what I would say. Your room looks great as it is, its definitely not offensive and I would happily have a cuppa and a chat in there. Saying that I agree that it needs more work to make it the place that you would totally love. My favourite type of interiors are those that look like they've evolved over a period of time and not the ones where the owner goes and buys everything to match and beautifully coordinate and call it done!! Don't get me wrong I admire these interiors a lot and tend to decorate my own spare bedrooms in this manner because its a lot quicker and easier. I think you should deal with one thing at a time instead of focusing on the overall picture and take your time deciding every single piece that comes in that room, don't rush it. Enjoy choosing and educating your eye by doing a lot of research. I live by a mantra as far as my interiors go, if I absolutely love it then it will work. And I think this is important because our living spaces should reflect us most of all and relate to us and our lifestyles. So tackle that wall because it seems to me its the thing that bothers you most. Get your colour or wallpaper up and live with it for a while, you will know if its right or wrong then if you feel it doesn't work then you can look for a tv unit as an alternative. I would be inclined to buy (ikea malm are a favourite of many style lovers) or indeed have a handy hubby build you a set of simple consoles and position either side. Use some art work above to fill the wall around the tv and make it less obvious stuck there on its own and a couple of lamps and I think that wall could become your friend. As for my upholstered ottoman thank you :) , it was a rescued orange pine coffee table from a local skip, upholstered it myself in a gorgeous quality zebra fabric to pull in the dark colour from my painted Chinese TV cabinet turned booze bar (wish I could replace it). The nail trim made it look like I bought it in an expensive shop and it takes our feet every day watching telly :) Phew sorry for the war and peace :)

You will need to move away from small incandescent light sources. Those JLP lights will be like adding candles. If you paint the ceiling white you can use a decent quality linear LED linear light source instead of those low out put spots - it would also save you lots on your energy bill. For example, this linear light comes in any RAL (colour) and a 73W 10000Lm LED version wold cost you around £290 delivered: This would be mounted where you have your current spotlights but would one of your spots delivers between 420 and 750Lm. If you had this colour matched to the beams they would blend in and your ceiling would become your light source. We do this a lot with RGB for night clubs and theatres - it creates a great ambience.

We had this in our last house. The post was extraordinarily useful as it housed plug and ethernet sockets for running stuff on the island, as well as the master heating controller for the house, and extra switch for the island pendant lights (H section steel beam, so lots of room for running cables along two sides of the post). Really did not detract from the kitchen very much at all, and was a lot cheaper than the goal-post steel that would have been required otherwise. I'll try to find a pic. You can also, as others have said, make a feature of it with a round post, or even just the painted steel beam itself for an industrial look.

Sorry Mat not sure if I follow. Are you having storage put in by the door? There is no storage labelled on your plans. If so, then visually speaking, the room starts from where the floor starts not from where the wall behind the cabinets starts. So if you have the same distance from both sides i.e. from right wall and from the left cabinet, it will still look symmetrical. Do you see how the room starts from the door of the cabinet and not from the splash back behind the sink? Here the column between the doors looks the same size as the wall next to the cabinets, whereas in reality the wall is at least 60cm wider. Again here the door appears to be in the centre of the room but in reality the wall on the left hand side is much wider because it carries on behind the cabinets. The designer has cleverly placed a T.V. there to stop the eye from noticing the rest of the wall. The same effect can be achieved with floor to ceiling cabinets. Was that what you were asking about or have I gone way off?

I'm not convinced faux beams are significantly less expensive than rebuilding the ceiling, particularly in the scheme of what sounds like a pretty major remodel. How deep are the rafters in each area? What type of insulation do you currently have and what would you be installing? How big of an area are we talking about?

@jslazart the contractor says it's 2 inches difference. Not sure what the insulation is yet. @ci_lantro great idea -- the new section was to have some recessed lamps pointing down, if they do redo the ceiling we can ask them to include the same lighting throughout the entirety now that there is access. I will ask about another layer of drywall to see if that's a possibility. Thanks everyone!
