Has anyone successfully transferred heat from stove to other rooms?

We were in Australia last year and were fascinated by a system they use over there whicg transfers heat from their stove in ducting pipes in the loft and into vents in other parts of the house! I am interested to know if anyone has used a system like this in the UK. We live in a large bungalow and have a lovely 13KW stove in the living area but the heat doesnt spread down to the bedroom area. Would somehow love to get the excess heat from the living area to bedrooms somehow. Last night living area was 28C and bedrooms were 13C!! Any suggestions!

Apart from leaving door open, and installing a small fan, I guess the only other option is to install another fire at the bedroom end ?!

It was obviously designed that way to start with so there isn’t a huge amount you can do with your current stove except leave doors open as OnePlan mentioned above.
We have a little fan on ours to push the hot air out but it will only reach so far.

Our bungalow is the same ie warm in th extension (all the living areas) as south facing and freezing on the North side. We have only just started to put the central heating on for 20 mins at night to take the nip out of the air in the bedrooms. Not needed the rads for our open plan rooms yet where the log burner is.
Luckily we prefer a cooler bedroom! Ha ha

So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

Hi there.. Yes they are bought by the size of the area you need to heat... We lived in the Shetland isles.for 5 years, and was an old craft house. And mostly to heat the hole house.. When it was hot,, it was hit and such a warm and welcoming feature on our most chilly and windy days... But the things is it can also be hard work.. Maybe not as much if you are in a warmer area. We could freely get pallets which helped immensely... And we tried to remove as many nails as we could see.. Otherwise these got caught in the grate at the bottom... But I would still say hard work . We got coal about £10 a bag, peat was the best for heat, but that started to get a little dearer to. All in all we paid about £2500 with the fire and fitting. About 3 years ago now. Didn't regret it at all. But would think twice about having one now.. I ain't getting any younger..

I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout .

Hello@jones1978, We had the UFH installed 4 years ago and when researching it, I didn't even consider rugs and trapped heat; my thinking was that is 'they' say you can use carpet, a rug wouldn't make a difference. Well, as I discovered, it depends. If your rug is one of those heavy, high density knots wool rugs, the chances are that it will keep the heat trapped. However, a rather light, either cotton, sisal, viscose or thin wool rug doesn't seem to affect the overall temperature. I think the overall room temperature also depends on your insulation. The office room in the photos above is basically an internal room, it has no exterior walls or windows, so we actually rarely put the heating on in there even in December - and hubby works from home most of the week. Our living room, on the other hand, is the only room in the house with single glazing (conservation area rules) and a heavy rug; it's the coldest room in the house and looses heat pretty quick if we don't close the shutters. Luckily for us, the fireplace is functional and we light a fire almost every evening in the winter. I've been thinking about buying a thinner rug, but it really doesn't bother us that much. Make of this what you will, but personally, I still love UFH and I'd rather live with no rugs than go back to radiators... Good luck with your project! @mckevis - congrats on finishing! I have a stove engineer coming tomorrow as he has a ducting vent system that he could install... it sounds very similar to what we saw in Aus. Looking forward to see what he proposes.

Install a back boiler heated by stove and run pipes and radiators off it?
