what to do with mirror area in toilet?
Hi all,
I have started redecorating my downstairs toilet and I am suddenly not sure of what to do with the mirror/mirror area...
The mirror is currently in a recess, in front of the sink (see picture).
I was planning to leave it as it is, having repainted the frame white to match the rest of the woodwork in the toilet (there are 3 cupboards in this toilet, which will all be painted white). Note: the frame is not reattached yet, I need to glue it - hence the large gaps that need to be filled.
Two walls (the one with the window and the one with the door) are going to be painted a grey/brown color and the other two walls (the one of the mirror and the one on the right of the mirror) are going to be wallpapered with a light pink and metallic geometric motif wallpaper (see picture). I am trying to give it a subtle Art Deco feel (our house is 1930s but with no period feature).
I am not sure anymore of what to do with the mirror area...
Should I leave it as it is? Or is there something better I could do?
If I keep it as it is, should I wallpaper the recess or not?
Any suggestions?

Comments (15)Hi Dynamo, I'm responsible for the design in your photo and delighted you like the look of this room. You would only need a few square meters of the split mosaic tiles which are available of sheets, so not expensive for a striking feature. Also, easy to keep free of dust with a quick once over with a dust pan brush, or brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner . WC's are often overlooked but when you consider its a room you use every day and your guests use too, why not make it an enjoyable experience! An alternative and very inexpensive idea for your walls and my signature in practically every home I renovate, is installing 6mm MDF panelling with a 10mm shadow gap in between each panel, apply with Pink Gripfil adhesive. 600mm x 600mm square or horizontal panels of any height add a sense of depth and soul to boring flat, painted walls. A sheet of MDF is cheap as chips, just make sure you prime and undercoat thoroughly with a mini roller before applying eggshell finish or acrylic paint. It's not a main bathroom so not susceptible to humidity, therefore emulsion paint in a contrast shade will work well too. 1. You could put wallpaper on the recess as well. In case you leave the mirror's frame white, it will resemble the windows (I would not go with this option)
2. If you want to make the mirror more embracing the overall design ( as a matter of fact, the mirror could be the focal point in the bathroom), I would paint the frame a darker color to match the walls, or a dark bronze one (to give it a more Art Deco finish).
3. You should keep the mirror.

What about glass shelves in front of the mirror with a few ornamental bits and pieces on? I did this in a dark downstairs loo. (But I love clutter). Will try to post a picture.

4 years agoThe recess looks like it was a window. You could incorporate a medicine cabinet a very Art Deco thing. If you are handy you can get an Ikea cabinet and cut it to the size of the recess or ask a carpenter to make you a bespoke cabinet. You can add an Art Deco mirror as a door and some 1920-30s sconces to finish the look

Just wanted to thank you all for your advices.
In the end, we painted the recess white and put a frame (made out of MDF cut to size) around the mirror. I painted the frame the same colour as the painted walls. We then wallpaper the wall (but not the recess)
I am very pleased with the results (even if it took us about 3 months to finish a tiny toilet ahah!) Hope you will like it too :)
