matt wood paint

Can anyone suggest a matt-finish paint suitable for interior woodwork (doors and skirting)? I was interested in Johnstones flat oil paint but not keen because it's high VOC. Is Zinsser Allcoat Exterior matt suitable? Anything else?

Valspar, you can also get it in Matt finish the premium is very hard wearing.

Thanks. That product is not available in matt, so I guess the eggshell version is my best bet?

That is down to personal taste really. How much finger prints show up will depend a lot more on the quality of paint than the actually sheen, although to be fair with a french grey you shouldn't have too much trouble anyway. Even more so with a handleless kitchen, given that the point of touch is often hidden from view. In terms of clean food spills off, then a satin finish is easier to keep clean.

Definitely prefer Matt for walls, but love oil based gloss for woodwork. I've tried water based soft sheen for woodwork in the past but found it hard to get a good finish and dirt clings to it. I'm getting los of favourable interest in my latest brilliant white doors and skirting. Cleaning brushes is a bit more trouble but well worth it I think.

If you are getting an effect like that you need to prepare more, it is a sign that the new paint is not adhering to the surface. Wash down first with Simple Green or Sugar Soap then sand to provide 'key' for the new paint.

I personally would not as it might 'peel', it might not, but better safe than sorry. Let the paint thoroughly dry and if it's the same base ie Acrylic, which is most likely these days, then sand and re-paint. If you do not wish to sand, or they are different bases, then wait for the paint to thoroughly dry and then use Zinsser 1-2-3 primer or even Zinsser Peel Stop to go over the gloss and then paint with the Matt.

Could have sworn they did it in matt but yes eggshell may be your best choice in this brand. I have used it in another a project in satin which has only a slight sheen.

Water based eggshell is nice. It’s not exactly matt but it is low sheen. Low VOCs too. I’ve used both F&B and Little Greene’s versions and they are both great, but LG just a bit better - lovely finish.

Hi Sonia, I always find F&B eggshell needs 3-4 coats (never fun when doing a staircase), do you think LG needs fewer?

@colourhappy on my bookcase 😊 it was bare wood so I used 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of eggshell top coat. Really pleased with the finish 👍
