Plasticky kitchens make me sad

Just been to my first three showrooms (Magnet, German and an independant) and I have been left cold. Although many doors are real wood or veneer (or wood grain 'effect') they feel so plasticky which I'm assuming is down to the spray painting? I've attached some looks I like, mainly slab and slab inframe but suspect my budget of £15k (excl appliances) means this look is beyond my means? Any ideas or suppliers I should consider? I felt exactly like this. You could try buying an Ikea Kitchen and then going to a company that do Ikea hacks, they can make bespoke doors and drawers fronts that fix onto Ikea units. Another issue is that wood does change colour, so a whitewashed wood kitchen that looks very earthy will darken over time.

What a beautiful and perfect table you found! Hubba hubba - those legs are just gorgeous. Well done and thanks for calling out to me. As for the chair mix, I think four beige and two merlot would be lovely. I think you like a traditional look, so I'm a bit worried that you won't be happy with it. If the table will normally be smaller with four beige chairs around it and maybe put the two merlot ones on either side of the radiator cover/"console", then definitely do the mix. Mismatched chairs around a dining table are often all different or the same make and model in a multitude of colours or the same colour in different styles. Do a Houzz search and see if you can find your planned mix and if you like the look. If in doubt, get four beige and look at them for a while! You could tie the two chair colours together with little cushions on the chairs - maybe just on the two merlot ones. We are often approached by clients who are creating an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. To overcome some of the issues we make cabinetry which can hide away the usual clutter found in a busy kitchen. Bi-fold and pocketing doors are great in this instance as ovens and even sinks can be hidden away, making the cabinetry seem more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen. Our clients love being able to change the look of a space in an instance! It is crucial to make sure you choose your appliances carefully, i.e. a quiet dishwasher and a good extractor are of huge benefit here. As long as the space is thoughtfully planned there is no reason that it shouldn't work functional and aesthetically.

Not sure whether they are making a comeback, but we have recent experience of both and think it just depends on the house. Our old house was a 1960s build, split level (built into the hill) with a kitchen off the dining room, and the sitting room up three steps from the opposite side of the dining room. From the sitting room one could look down onto the dining room and through to the kitchen. When we refitted the kitchen about fifteen years ago we knocked out the units which divided the kitchen from the dining room and put an island in the space. It worked fantastically well for us; a great place to sit and catch up with the kids when they came in from school, and many times their friends joined us in chat and banter around the island. The house was perfect for entertaining and for our family, even though there was no separate (able to be closed off) sitting room. Although now both adults and left home, our kids were very sad when we moved away and sold the house, as were many of their friends. (Maybe because it was party-central at times...!) We now have an Edwardian semi with a fairly large kitchen at the back, accessed through the dining room, and we have a kitchen table and chairs plus the computer in there. The dining room is for when we have guests, and Sunday lunch when I do a roast, even if it's just the two of us. The kitchen gets the rising sun and is lovely first thing in the morning. Our sitting room is at the front of the house and is smaller and cosy, ideal for snuggling up in front of the log burner at this time of year. And it gets the setting sun which is nice in the afternoon/evening. We can still seat plenty of people though. We thought we had to have open plan as that's what we'd had for so long, in fact what we have now is working perfectly for us. We still have plenty of entertaining space and have pre dinner nibbles in the kitchen before eating in the dining room. In the summer we mostly eat outside as we had the garden landscaped this year and we love it out there. A well designed garden with comfortable seating has proved to be the best thing we've done with a house! Angie

Am I sad to get excited that F&B have new colours coming out?

My paint card arrived this morning (I hope all yours did too!) and although I'm a little bit in love with Sulking Room Pink and De Nimes, I'm fairly underwhelmed overall. I much preferred the Olive (archived now) to this new Bancha, which I think is too "green" (that said i'm not a green colour person, so that may be clouding my judgement), but I could warm to Treron. The neutrals are so samey - Jitney being a direct replacement for Archive (which I see has quietly been retired along with Smoked Trout if I'm not mistaken). And I'm totally unimpressed by yet another shade of white. I cannot imagine ever giving Rangwali house room. I think it's quite unsophisticated and garish, and could be quite cold looking. The two darker colours aren't my thing at all, but I could see the red one being popular in the right setting. I was also interested to note that they colour chart cover has had a slight make-over, moving from the ubiquitous grey, to grey and a browner colour. With the Dulux colour of 2019 being a warm brown colour, I am wondering if grey is now on it's way out? I did have a feeling it was on the wane. If that is the case, I suspect there'll be a lot of anthracite grey windows being painted in the foreseeable future and a lot of owners of dove grey and plummet kitchens asking how to repaint kitchen doors.

There's lots of very good textured melamine faced boards available to make doors with by companies like Egger, Kronospan, Xylocleaf, Pfleiderer and depending on where you get the doors from you can also have the doors and drawers made with a continuous grain pattern (2nd picture sink run), or if you prefer a wood veneer door then Deseo have a wide range of veneers to choose from.

If you like the slab inframe look (3rd picture) with a painted door Marpatt have a range called Horizon Inframe which is a 22mm thick door and can be painted in any colour.

The last picture of the De Beauvoir Cottage kitchen, Deseo have a door similar to this called Alta Framed.
