Original 1910 Floorboards

Advice would be great if you have experience?
How do I get these cleaned to their original state? I'm sure an industrial sander is not the way ahead
I'm hoping to eventually achieve a light waxed look

Actually I think a sander is the way forward. We sanded our floorboards by hiring a sander and mini sander for the edges and they turned out really good. We had some dried vinyl glue in places and the sander removed all of it. It was a very messy, dusty job though. We then hoovered and wiped down the boards and then did three coats of satin floor varnish. As it was a walk through room we did each coat at night before bedtime and it was dry by the morning. Most floorboards are softwood pine so wear and tear is an issue.

Now i will admit that even so called diamond hard varnish Is not very hard wearing and the varnish will wear off. I had a dog at the time and his nails raked the floor a treat! Im not sure wax is hardy enough? I got fed up with the scruffyness of it and in the end we had a laminate floor laid over it which is much tougher and easier to care for.

Hi, It would require quite a bit of work and sander is the way to do it. You would also need to seal the gaps and remove any protruding nails. Agree with Sonia,maintenance would be a lot of work too

I don't dislike the fillers, but the whole point of them is to stop draughts. The boards swell and retract with the humidity in the house and long term fillers or fillets are a good solution. Taking the boards up although messy is a good solution. Just remember that the houses were built to have air circulating, hence the vents in the fireplaces when people block them up and air bricks for under the floors. This is a newer product that you press between the boards, so you still see the gaps but lessen the draught. Draughtex

Hi Raquel. To preserve the patina and avoid the boards ending up looking new, I would lightly sand and then finish with a product called Bona Traffic matt finish (it's tough and we have used it in commercial projects too). We have had good results. May test out a section? Regards David

Personally I think carpet is preferable for bedrooms and landing both in terms of noise insulation and creating a cosy feeling. That's just my preference though - to have something warm and soft underfoot when I get up in night etc. I think wall to wall carpet will offer the most sound insulation. I agree with you though that floorboards and rugs is an appealing look. We've got this downstairs in our house. We invested in using Celotex (like Kingspan, solid insulation boards) under the floorboards throughout the whole ground floor which has made a huge difference in terms of warmth and drafts. It's also worth spending time and effort using foam tape under beading or in big gaps between boards. Luckily our actual floorboards were in really good condition so we didn't have any cost associated with restoring them. I'm not sure to what degree cost is a factor for you, but you might find that once you add up sanding, restoring and really good insulation measures that it actually works out to be more than putting down a nice carpet and good underlay.
