Colour dilemma - grey walls with cream/pink brick slips
Hi, decorating living room and have brick slips in fireplace that are called yellow brick but the actual colours are cream - a mixture of Farrow and Ball Ringwold Ground, Farrows Cream, Dorset Cream, Hay, Setting Plaster and Pink Ground. Before painting final coat of paint on walls want to be sure that Farrow and Ball Skimming Stone (pale warm grey) works with the brick slips as general consensus is to avoid putting grey and cream together. Any interior designers or anyone with eye for colour could advise? Thanks

Comments (85)It looks great, I'm glad you and your daughter are so pleased and she has lots of room for friends over, playing etc. It can also be easily and cheaply adapted as she grows if she wants. My only criticism (if you can call it that) is that if not already your daughter may soon also want the desk to double up as a dressing table and therefore I think a mirror was a good idea but the memo board (which looks great) can always be moved as and when needed. (I thought i'd posted a comment on that previously but obviously not!). I might also add a desk light there for working during winter months. Comments (17)Sliding doors are proving very popular at the moment as they can stack to one side and not protrude into the garden space and be easier to move than full set of bi-folds so that would an approximate opening of about 4m with 3 x 1.250m (plus frame ) panel of glass that would all stack in parallel inline. Or you could try panoramic doors they are more versatile as they are detachable from each other and give you more options for you layout at the finish. There a tutorial on you tube ? Do you have building control on these works as I am finding that architects are making us use a lot more steel as in a goal post design for stability, depending on how wide you want to go with the opening?...See Morecolour dilemma-paint fireplace or wall??

Now colours that I think would look lovely with your blue curtains are the soft pastels - green, pink and pale yellow, but you want a deep cosy colour so let’s move on! I’m a little bit obsessed with dirty pinks at the moment, a world away from Barbie pink so don’t panic. Colours like F&B Setting Plaster or Little Greene’s Dorchester Pink, or Blush which is much darker and cosier. I also like deep stone colours such as LG Roman Plaster, or if you wanot to go even darker, Silt looks nice, very organic tones. I’ll try and find some pics. Comments (24)Hello, it’s funny but warm cream shades fell out of favour when grey seemed to take over the world of decor for many years. I like a warm, buttery cream but I struggled to find images of it used with grey kitchen units. I managed to find this pic of a grey DeVol kitchen and cream walls. Love the way it’s teamed with wooden shelves. As to paint shades, I’ve used Dulux Ivory and Dulux Elderflower Tea in the past, as well as Almond White. Lovely warm neutrals. i also wondered whether changing the cupboard doors to something more to your taste may improve things? There are lots of companies that do this, and I noticed even B&Q sell just doors too. Just a suggestion....See More

4 years agoHi - Just for again, there is a method which takes away the guesswork. with a little device & app on your phone, it’s possible to measure the colours within your bricks. It gives lots of detail but most key, is to which Hue Family the average colour belongs & where within that Hue Family, it sits.
Knowing that is particularly helpful when working with neutrals, to ensure they harmonise well. You can use it to partner furnishings & accessories within confidence too. Here’s an example.

For your information, F&B Skimming stone has a Lightness of 85.25 (out of a 100). A Chroma of 6.154, which indicates it is a near neutral. And a Hue Angle of 88.21° So it sits close to the centre of the Yellow Hue Family. Useful if you need to partner it with other near neutrals or even more colourful colours. You can use the geometry of the Wheel to create harmonies.
Were you to find that Skimming Stone felt a little to yellow next to your pinkish brick, the strategy would be to find something with a similar Lightness & Chroma, but move the Hue Angle anti-clockwise nearer towards the Yellow-Red Hue Family.
But I hope your colour dilemma works out fine & this is knowledge to tuck away until you need it again.🌈
