bamboo/reed screening

I am planning to use bamboo/reed screening, will I need to make it weatherproof and apply some form of coating? If so, what’s the best and most easy coating to apply?

Not absolutely necessary as bamboo/reed for the most part is naturally water resistant. It will however age and weather to a silver colour much the same way as wooden fence panels. May also rot quicker if it’s in contact with constant moisture such as soil. So if you’d like to preserve or even change the colour or prevent rotting them a wood preservative would be the product to use. Only problem is that bamboo canes have a sort of shiny coating which may prevent any product being absorbed. Since they’re relatively cheap to buy I’d just let them weather and replace or stain when necessary.

I've got bamboo in a big half whisky barrel planter. If I remember rightly the depth was the bigger issue. I would steer clear of runners though it will escape. Even a clumping bamboo will need digging a splitting on a regular basis otherwise the roots will damage the wall. If you like the look of bamboo have a look at Nandina it's a nice alternative but a bit better behaved. Failing that I'd go with a mixed border and climbers to disguise the fence.

I've used specialist window film on glass and it is reasonably easy to put on. Spray both the window and the film with a mix of water and washing-up liquid and then slide the film on. Then use a squeegee to squeeze out the excess water between the glass and the film. Leave to dry. Job done. It gives the glass the appearance of frosted glass. I used products from this company: https://www.purlfrost.com/ . I tried to photograph it but it didn't come out too well, as attached. The picture is held on the wall with those sticky picture hooks (just in case you were wondering).

planter idea for screening / interest

Looking to plant up this planter with some light screening and architectural plants for year round interest. Modern planting style preferred. Thinking about bamboo but not sure which sort to pick as don’t want to get too high or invasive and / or grasses but worried they won’t provide screening in winter. Maybe some nice flowering perennials too for summer colour. Screening needs to be light as will take light from next door. Must be easy to maintain as I am hopeless at gardening! Bed is 9m x 1.2m deep x 0.8m high. Has irrigation fitted. Thanks in advance!

Bamboo screening is a short term fencing idea as it will eventually break down over the years, but it is certainly budget friendly and can be replaced reasonably inexpensively.
