planter idea for screening / interest

Looking to plant up this planter with some light screening and architectural plants for year round interest. Modern planting style preferred.

Thinking about bamboo but not sure which sort to pick as don’t want to get too high or invasive and / or grasses but worried they won’t provide screening in winter. Maybe some nice flowering perennials too for summer colour.

Screening needs to be light as will take light from next door. Must be easy to maintain as I am hopeless at gardening!

Bed is 9m x 1.2m deep x 0.8m high.
Has irrigation fitted.

This community is amazing! I've only just joined - what a beautiful lot you all are! Minnie, I LOVE the idea of a crittall window style shower. I'm going to look online but if you know where to go please do point the way. The brick slips are definitely on my list now, will have to find convincing looking ones. Have you used them? I'm planning to insulateand condensation proof the bathroom using hempcrete so it'll definitely be slips rather than the exposed brick itself. AJ, YES to those ideas esp where to put the radiator, hadn't thought about that bit. I'm not sure about the copper bath but you've got me thinking, which is just what I wanted. I love those elegant tables. I think we're too messy for a towel ladder and actually maybe we'll go for heated towel rails, one either side other window - oh, I suppose instead of the rad.. see how this collaboration works!! Minnie, thanks so much- I think that's a great idea re wallpapering the stairwall. Am going to look into pricing that. Also love the console table with books on bottom. My husband loves the ceiling to floor window in landing, so, although I loved your idea re upholstered bench, he unfortunately is adamant he doesn't want anything there! Misha, thank you so much for all your lovely ideas .. That idea re the tree mural is very interesting- could you recommend anywhere I could get a nice one like the one in your picture? It's also a more budget friendly option, if it comes to it.... Re colour schemes, I was thinking of a dash of anything warm, i.e. Reds/ greens/ warm neutrals, and I would tend to veer away from blues and yellows personally... I need also to figure out which would be best in terms of our picture display, as, unlike your photo, they are all of different sizes and frames!!

I would add some basic uprights and cross beams over your decking area so you can add hanging baskets (with strawberries in since they are close to door and you can water easily) and maybe some solar lantern or fairy lights. Just a basic structure will help that feel more private and comfortable even though it won’t actually screen it. And I did wonder if you could have another raised area so you only walk down 3 steps to a platform then another two steps to garden proper?

I think that would work really well. Bamboo is used a lot for screening because some are pretty tall, and planting in a trough will keep them in check. I would suggest you buy the biggest troughs you can afford as this will mean less watering in warmer weather. Use John Innes Compost as it is soil based and pretty heavy, so plants won’t be knocked over in the wind. Wood or heavy metal is better than plastic as again plastic is too lightweight to hold up the plants when windy. Evergreen plants are a good choice so you have a green wall all year round. Suggested plants would be Bamboo, there are loads so check they are clump forming so less chance of spreading. I think buying from a specialist Bamboo nursery will give you the best choice. I particularly like black bamboo (only the stems are black!). There are plenty online. Other shrubs that would work are Photinia Red Robin, Viburnham tinus and a climber called Trachelospermum which was wonderful scented flowers in the summer, but is a slow grower. All pretty low maintenance and you can prune to fit the space. Just remember to water well in dry spells. There’s loads more but i don’t want to overload you!
