Help with windows, fascias, soffits

We are having an extension at the back (south facing) of our bungalow that will have bifold doors looking in two directions in the garden. At the same time we also plan to replace all the windows, front door, fascias, soffits and gutters.

Originally we thought we'd have dark grey windows and doors but now think these may be too dark.

Other thoughts have been lighter greys, Irish oak, lighter wood tones, heritage greens but we can't decide or imagine what it would look like.

The windows are mahogany coloured at the moment with similar coloured fascias. This picture makes it look brighter as the weather is so good but on a dull day it looks drab. Ive only included a small portion of the house as the rest is a building site!

Any ideas or advice would be welcomed.

Mahogany windows and doors were all the rage in the 80s, but I never liked it, so depressing I agree! I would go for sage green or pale grey or taupe. I’m not sure what Heritage Green is? Dark grey will, I think, be rather depressing too. I think classic black for your gutters and drainpipes always looks smart and that colour makes things recede rather than stand out. I’m thinking the soffits in the same shade as the windows would look smart. I've found a few ideas to inspire you, I hope!

Maybe something like Farrow and ball elephants breath shown here or if you want lighter skimming stone? I agree dark fascias and soffits, maybe a browny black?

my photoshopping skills are terrible but i may be able to attempt other colours (if I can find a window and door) to give an idea!

Grey....an over used colour but a safe bet. As the window frames upstairs appear to be graphite and the downstairs windows white, the shade of grey will need to be on the pale side otherwise the top windows will be "swallowed up" and the white window frames below will stand out and the overall look will be unattractive. So if grey it must be pale grey.

It’s quite difficult to see from the photos as the scaffolding is still up and we have mahogany windows which are very dated and I don’t want to keep. The fascias around the roof are black but I feel that the fascia is so large that black will be too huge and stark. I’m feeling in a dilemma. I hope the photos help a little.

We have a very similar phenomenon with our guttering/downpipes. After we had ours replaced (I’m still regretting getting rid of our iron main stench pipe - if that’s the term) I started hearing knocking, popping, banging noises coming from them. After quite a bit of head-scratching it turned out this is indeed caused by contracting/expanding the plastic pipes, in our case by using hot water. We‘re now kind of used to the noises this makes but it’s not great really.

Thanks Sonia and minnie101. Whats interesting and helpful is that you have both gone lighter in colour. And you've helped us decide that dark grey isn't what we will have.

One suggestion has been white which will be a massive change but will be timeless.

Do you think white will work? Maybe with a coloured front door?

White would work well and then you can paint the door any colour you like. White is still probably the most popular window colour. If the windows are in good nick you could paint them any colour you like really. I think pale colours rather than dark.

Thanks Sonia. We like the colours you suggested but are concerned they will age (like the mahogany of the 80s!)
The windows are all worn out so we will be replacing them all. Think we will go for a coloured door to add a bit of interest. Really appreciate your comments!
