putting the utility room upstairs?

Hi, we are extending our house and reconfiguring it and I'm wondering whether it would be off to have the utility room upstairs? It makes much more sense to have the washing machine and dryer on the floor where we take showers and put our clothes away? It could then also be used as the ironing room too? any thoughts :)

I hang out washing to dry outside as much as possible so it wouldn't suit me taking a basket of soaking washing downstairs and out everytime, it's much heavier when wet too.

For me the washer and dryer would have to go downstairs. I’m another who likes to peg washing outside so for me it would be more convenient. Nothing wrong however in having a linen basket stored somewhere upstairs to put dirty washing in when you’re getting in the shower and then just carry it to the washing machine to wash.

I personally wonder why anyone ever had a wet room, they're so hideously impractical and should be reserved for people with bathing difficulties! A shower roon and utility combined is far better, keep it that way, Where would you put the washer / dryer? you can't keep it in a wet room it'll go rusty.

I would love to move our wm and drier upstairs but our last house was a hundred yrs old and my husband felt the floorboards wouldn't cope with the vibrations of 1600 spin so hay stayed in the kitchen which had a concrete floor. Our current house is new and, again, he felt the chipboard wouldn't be solid enough and they're in the corner of the garage. In the US, a laundry cupboard on the upstairs landing is de rigeur!!

We have an upstairs laundry room and I dry shirts and things I can't tumble on hangers on a rail. If the tumbler is on then the clothes dry really quickly. The max spin speed on my washing machine is 1400rpm, so clothes are really barely damp when they come out. We have a bathroom type fan to avoid the room getting damp. Re noise, I wouldn't put the machines against a wall where for example someone's headboard is the other side of it. But then again, I don't do any washing overnight. With the door ajar, you can't hear noise anywhere else upstairs. The machines are over the garage so I can't really say how much noise comes through the ceiling.

In your kitchen plan the space between the wall run and the island is massive - maybe 1.3 or 1.4m? It should be more like 1m otherwise you will find the two surfaces are inconveniently far apart. That also means there is more space for a dining table than it looks like from your plans. Do you have a cellar? If not then the understairs space is available for a WC, you might need to carve a small corner out of the kitchen to add to the understairs space depending on its size. Or if you do have a cellar the wc can go where Jonathan has put it (entrance can be from the understairs area if you have the height, or from the kitchen if not). Is there somewhere upstairs you could put a laundry room/area? In or near a bathroom perhaps?

It depends very much on how it suits your day to day life, my utility doubles as a boot room, and somewhere to keep the vac and other cleaning materials. However, if you have dedicated space upstairs and no one objects when you put on the dryer at 11pm because something is needed for the morning.........

this is what we had when we lived in the US and it was AMAZING! but we used the dryer for everything (gas-powered, super cheap and the climate wasn't right for hanging clothes out to dry). if you use the dryer all the time, go for it. if you hang outside, don't do it. now we are back in the UK I would only add a laundry room downstairs.

I would have an upstairs laundry room. I agree with you that it makes far more sense to launder clothes and bedding upstairs.
As far as the argument against and carrying washing downstairs.... those people do it anyway- they strip the bed, take it downstairs to the washer and then bring it back up again when it’s all done.

I would not have washing facilities upstairs as this will create additional risk of future plumbing issues and additional noise where the sleeping spaces are situated. If you are adding an extension, you should have a number of option to fit washing units into the kitchen or next to the downstairs toilet.

I like the idea of having the washing machine upstairs if there is space, as I find carrying the washing downstairs difficult as I have arthritis. I can’t be bothered with the “is it going to rain or not” involved with drying clothes outside. I dry mine on a clothes dryer in a spare bedroom. As to the complexities of the pipework, well people who live in flats seem to cope.
