I'm with eimearcahill, there is absolutely NOTHING tasteful about my Christmas decorations, it's excess everywhere. I did suggest when my daughters both got to their twenties that I might scale things back a bit but, after a reaction that could have earned them a walk on part in The Grinch who Stole Christmas, I realised that it was obviously very important that I spent the best part of a day turning the house into Santa's grotto :D I now have a granddaughter so I am resigned to many more years to come....

Hi Gabby, I've chosen trees that will be low maintenance. The Acer silhouette is a narrow tree and grows to about 4 metres which is enough to provide screening without spreading or being too over-powering. I'm not sure about the Arbutus, I think it is going to be a few years before I have to think about pruning but I'm hoping it will grow upwards rather than outwards. If it does need pruning I'll speak to my neighbours and offer to cut their side of it. The other thing I considered was the benefits of evergreen trees, not only do they provide privacy all year round but they also won't cause alot of additional trips to the recycling centre in autumn to dispose of the leaves.

I’m presuming they’re from 2 different trees? I agree with Sonia that it’s hard to tell the type but the first pic definitely looks like eating apples & the 2nd cooking apples. Both can be used for cooking but the cooking apples will soften much more & go mushy while the eating apples will keep their shape more so could be used for things like tarte tatin. Other options are apple pie, apple crumble, apple cake or using them in savoury recipes, e.g with pork. If you cook the cooking apples to make an apple sauce, that can be substituted for butter in some recipes to make a lower fat cake. We chop & store our apples in the freezer for use during the year. Or you could invest in an apple press to get juice / make cider.

Hi Andy, what a lovely gesture. Unfortunately I do not know of any trees, especially fruit trees, that can cope without daily watering after planting. Once they are settled in then watering does lessen. Fruit trees are thirsty plants. I cannot seem to see many trees in that beautiful location? A lot of trees do not cope well in such an open coastal site, but I wonder if it is worth searching for trees that will cope on the RHS website? They are the experts. I saw on the news recently where trees were planted along a motorway and unfortunately most of them died due to lack of watering. Lots of trees cope with drought, but they still need that initial watering in after planting. I wonder could the maintenance team on the site water it every couple of days? Perhaps planting it in the autumn when there is more chance of rain? Or, if you have a garden, could the tree be planted there? I hope you can find a solution soon.
