creating a front entrance ‘gate’ as a main door??
Our bungalow has the entrance door on the side. (Had to use the agents original photo as we have a large van and car parked there now so you can’t see it properly!)
We have a very large driveway that needs replacing and we also need to replace the back gates as they are falling apart (old house we are renovating!)
We are wondering about moving the fence forward so it runs across the small garage to the other wall (presuming we don’t need planning for this!??) and creating a kind of front door gate entrance.
The reason for this would be to create extra security to our house, a space to hide the bins, security for the garage and also so that we can drive the campervan through and park in that back area rather than the main drive.
Also creating a smaller area driveway we have to replace as it’s going to be expensive!
My question - is this acceptable/doable?? Thinking of a sturdy material and modern and maybe adding a linked doorbell and house number and large letterbox on it as well??
Can’t find any images of similar things but I guess it would be like private estates who have an entrance gate at the front?

Comments (5)We have a similar set-up - in through the back door to a small porch then into the big square utility room and on into the playroom/spare room/den (depending who's using it) or kitchen. The thing that always bugs me is that everyone comes into a such a functional area rather than a welcoming space. I'm not overly bothered about the house looking like a showhome, but I feel I need to remove the laundry and tidy up the abandoned school bags, shoes etc if we're expecting visitors. People who just drop in get the full messy effect :) Also, if the washing machine or tumble drier is going while we're eating it's quite a noisy backdrop, so make sure you can shut them away. I would make it easy to separate the messy area from the kitchen and dining area so that mess and mud don't 'bleed' into the nicer areas. Comments (14)Thanks for all your comments. I think 'SC' is the stairs cupboard which has an opening in the kitchen. I agree about changing the opening to the hall. Thanks JenP. The hallway is fine. It's just the actual entrance hall we'll like to open up somehow for a little more circulation space if at all possible. At the moment , the stairs is immediately to to the left of the front door as you come in and a wall straight down on the other side. kiwimills, thanks.
