How would you furnish this room?

We’re moving house and I’m not sure how to furnish this room. It’s the biggest room in the house - 7.7m x 6.4m - but an odd L-shape with a staircase and two sets of patio doors to the garden.

There’s already a snug with wood burner, a study and a dining room elsewhere in the house so I don’t need this room to have a desk or dining table etc.

My first instinct is to put in floor to ceiling bookshelves along the wall on the far left in the pic, in between the two sets of doors. But what do I do with the rest of the space? A couple of armchairs in front of the shelves, a corner sofa somewhere?

And what about the odd bit to the right as you enter the room from the rest of the house?

The room is an extension to an old house, and the stairs lead up to a single bedroom and bathroom, and the two sets of patio doors lead to the garden, if that helps!

would appreciate any ideas!

You could add some roman blinds and dress curtains to the window to add character and create a focal point for that wall under which you could add a sofa and armchair in far right corner. I would add a large rug in the centre of the room and a floor lamp. Try loaf or BTC for lamps and Cox & Cox for lovely grey toned large rugs. The area with the pendants looks like it was laid out with a dining table in mind. A round glass top style might be an idea as introducing another wood may conflict with the beautiful floor. Wood legs might be okay, if you were careful in the colouring, but a table being completely wood might be too much. The floor rug in the lounge needs to go up a couple of sizes. Pics with a large rug with the feet of the lounge actually on the edge look proportioned, your current covering doesn't give that vision. Are you keeping the lounge furniture? If yes you could put the two chairs at either end or 'side' of a couch, but a couch which is visually lighter as they are very solid and heavy chairs.

If you want it quite visually calming then I would perhaps consider focusing on materials that are natural and keeping the colour palette 'quiet'. I would be tempted to paint the wall behind the TV a very deep earthy colour such as olive and hang a large oversized wicker pendant that could look beautiful againt the wall colour to distract from the TV. A TV on white wall creates such a strong contrast that all of the effort into putting subtle texture in the room would get lost. Personally I would buy a really beautiful sideboard and put it against a deep wall and style it. I would keep the other walls a soft neutral (warm but not too yellow) and hang a slubby linen blind on the slim window and natural curtains on the other large one. Tikamoon and Zara both sell lovely earthy products and their images are really beautifully styled. If you look on the Tikamoon images they often have earthy finishes, off white walls and maybe just one slab of deep colour. Ochres, cognacs, olives etc, not saturated colours. Hope this helps.

Hi Amy, Personally, I love fireplace surround and think they add a lovely feature in a room, although, perhaps not with the old electric fire you have in here! It's easy enough to take this out though, then perhaps just tile up the space with something a little more modern, paint the surround, and use the space where the fire was with some display logs instead! If you hop on Pinterest, you'll see plenty of ideas for this! For the positioning of the TV, you're slightly limited as you must be near an aerial, to avoid wires all over the place. Unless, of course, you don't watch terrestial TV - then the world is your oyster! In terms of sofas, the size of what you go for will depend on how many people live in your property, how often you entertain etc. How do you want to use the space? Hi, so is this the main living room? Or a 'bonus' room? Do you think you'd use it much? If it's not your main living area, it could be a lovely sitting room to make this a guest suite?

It’s a bonus room, I guess, but I’d like to use it as it’s so big (7.7x6.4m)! I imagine we’d use it to listen to records on a summer evening with the doors open, to read, perhaps to watch family films etc. I think it’d be wasted as a guest suite!

Hmm... It's a bit difficult without knowing the dimensions of all the walls.

My first instinct is to put bookcases in the corner to the right of the entrance? That would free up the wall between the two sets of doors for a big movie screen or TV, sofa opposite perhaps. And it gives that corner a purpose. Maybe you have space for a games table, like a football or snooker table. Bar?

What's the side of the 'jut-out' where the patio doors are? Could you add some measurements to your floorplan?

Thanks Carolina - that’s a good idea re the bookshelves. At the moment, the owners did have a TV mounted on the wall between the patio doors with sofa opposite, which to me just didn’t look right - it felt like it cut off the rest of the room and left lots of empty space.

Hi rinq- I’d love to, but I don’t know what the measurements are at the moment. We’re not in yet, so I only know the length of the longest walls. But those bits are long enough that there’s a double set of wooden patio doors, with prob a metre of space either side (I’m rubbish at distances tho!)
