Toilet clearance

Installing a small shower room and I have a fixed location for the toilet due to the soil pipe. I’ve tried to research clearance in front of the toilet and have some conflicting dimensions. Are there building regs I have to meet? If not what would be the minimum clearance in front of the toilet? I’m already looking at short projection toilets, just need to confirm if my design will work with a 50cm clearance in front. Thanks

While there are no building regs, according to victoriaplum.com there are set standards that recommend 760mm in front of a toilet, with a minimum of 510mm.

Thanks Sarah. I have seen that on the site. Was hoping someone in the design space could clarify that. I can’t seem to see any regulation but it’s really difficult to know if 51cm would be sufficient.

Hi, Could you have a utility on the right hand side to house the w/m, t/d and d/w, etc? You could then have an l-shaped kitchen with an island. Alternatively, You could have a bank of Base appliances, so your dishwasher, washing machine, dryer to the right hand side as well as the sink. You could then create a u-shapefd kitchen with a peninsular. the living room wall could have tall units to house ovens whilst the left side wall could have the hob.

Hi I see this as very interesting situation. Firstly lets establish why do you want to have hob on the peninsula. To be able to chat with sitting people on the other side when cooking? Than why would you put massive extractor between them and you? How much time you will actually spend in the front of the hob and how long during preparation , mixing, cutting etc? I have looked into the design and first thing I have seen is the position of the sink. You have placed sink away from natural light. This is extremely bad choice. Why not shifting it under the window and placing the hob where the sink is on the picture at the moment? You will gain daytime light when using sink and you will have hob away from sitting friends/family members on the peninsula but close enough for cooking same time. Making the peninsula 900 mm wide will give enough surface for sitting and for preparation, bah , you can even make them busy helping you on the other side. I few more issues with wall and base unit sizes/positioning but this is easily sorted when you will have proper kitchen designer involved. I understand you have a dream about having the hob on peninsula but few other pros above making points it is not good idea. You will do whatever you like but I understand the reason to post here was to find professional opinion.

Hi Jess, your concerns about the basin are quite right. 500 mm space left in front of the basin is hardly enough and you will have trouble to even turn around. If you are limited with the width of the cloakroom, why not make use of the length of it and put the basin behind the toilet like on the photos attached? Or clients have done it and seem to be very pleased with the solution. We would be happy to help you with your new cloakroom design.

With one of our toilets we only have a 50 cm space to the wall in front of it.

Even my son, who is just under 6ft7, manages fine. 😊

Thanks ED. That’s really helpful. Looking at 2 short projection toilets which would leave me either 60 cm 56 cm so should be ok.
