Help! Colour scheme dilemma

We have recently decorated our living room. The walls are Inchyra blue, Shaded white and drop cloth in the room. We have used greys and dark blue to decorate the room and we loved it however it feels a bit cold sometimes so we are now adding some rust colours to the room to make it a bit brighter. Is that the right thing to do? Could an interior designer give us some ideas please? We are still in the process of buying some artwork for the room so now is the time to decide if we want to go for the rust look or not.

First photo is the room without the rust colour and the last two with a couple of rust cushions we bought. Any advice much appreciated! Thank you!

I think you have a good eye. The burnt orange cushions really lift the scheme. I so want Inchyra Blue in my house one day!
In the picture below they have used a burnt orange armchair to create a similar effect, and the second picture they’ve used tan leather and a bit of yellow too.

It's a gorgeous room and a lovely colour scheme. Is it that it feels too dark, too cold or does the blue feel and bit overpowering? I love Inchyra Blue, I have it myself but it is very very dark. The brighter the cushions, the more they will stand out, lots of colours look good with it, especially ochres and browns.

Thank you so much for your comment. I love Inchyra blue too and the room always feels inviting and light as it’s in also in a SW position. I think before the rust addition it looked a bit matchy-matchy and it needed a bit more personality so that’s why I thought adding a colour would work but just feeling a bit nervous as we don’t have any experience in interior design etc. The room had F&B elephants breath on the walls and greys and yellows before so this time we wanted to go for something a bit different. Thanks a lot for your help! ☺️

I think it needs some depth and slightly modernised. I'd try muted tones maybe white greys and duck egg blues maybe a feature wallpaper to tie all the colours together and then some plain curtains. If ur handy with a sewing machine and budget conscious buy some basic white curtains and add a duck yet trim to the bottom and dress with some different patterned cushions. Also I'd add w mirror but I'd consider the flame is maybe get one that is full glass as u don't think you need any extra wood in the room.

Hi Ruth, I think green and pink look fab together. Just look at nature! A mossy green velvet sofa with soft pink walls will, I feel, look lovely. There are many hues of pink, and for walls I like a pale peachy pink as it’s lovely and warm. For flooring how about wood with a nice cosy rug? With woodwork you could carry the wall colour through if you wish, or stick with white, it’s just personal preference. Here’s a couple of ideas, the 2nd pic walls are F&B Dead Salmon. Not sure what the exact shade in the first pic is.

Hi Melody

The room looks lovely!

One way you can lift the room is by adding pattern and texture with a big area rug. This will connect all the furniture (make sure the rug does tuck under the legs of each piece) and ground the coffee table. A round rug would also work in here to take away the square edges a bit.

Create little pockets space by moving the coffee table out of the centre of the room and over to one of the sofas, Try turning the blue chair on an angle so that it is facing the door a little more and add a side table next to it, picking out the brassy golds of the lighting and the mirror, creating a cosy cup of tea and a book area.

Once the artwork goes in it will make a big difference to how the eye moves around the room. At the moment everything is very window cill level, which is why you can't quite put your finger on what is missing. Room design needs 'rhythm' which is essentially how the eye moves around a space. By adding the artwork, which should have a repetition of the colours and lines used in the room, the eye will be excited and not settle anywhere in particular.

Adding more height in the form of house plants or a floor lamp in the corner by the love seat, is also another good way of adding variation to the space.
