suggest a colour for the cabinets and walls

Hi everyone,

I've just moved into a new house and while the kitchen is fairly new, I find the dark floors and worktops combined with wooden cabinets makes it look dull and dated. I'm thinking of painting the cabinets and walls and maybe retiling the back splash until I can afford to do up the whole kitchen. Any suggestions on colours or easy ways to make the space look nicer?

I was thinking grey or a mushroom colour on the cabinets and maybe white/white-ish on the walls, and a white herringbone back splash?

The window is north west facing if that helps, it looks out onto a park.

I agree. That is a dated door colour. If you going to paint them I’d go for a standard dove grey. It’s in fashion, very popular and more or less anything will go with it.

Be warned though, painting kitchen unit doors is time consuming and patience is a virtue .

I think you've got to take the bubbling wallpaper off the wall. That done, i would like to suggest that you go with a grey as the contrasting colour to the pink. The darker the better to create a cosy-haven that can be highlighted with soft and ambient electric light at night time. Mix in a spattering of paler pinks (but within the same tone family just with more 'white' in them) and then an accent colour or two. You could consider orange/rust to enliven and deepen the scheme or navy and turquoise blues if you want to keep it relatively calmer. Good luck!

I just associate beiges, white and blues with Hampton style so would opt for white woodwork. Once you’ve chosen the linen colour look at the undertone in that and use a white with the same undertone

Your new bathroom looks lovely! Great job! What if you opt for a dark shade of green or blue with grey undertones, to give it that muted effect but it still has some colour and warmth to it. And then for the cloakroom a vibrant wallpaper in the same colour tones but with a big pattern? Good luck! Send us the end result!

Looking at the floor and tiles I think a shade of taupe would look lovely, perhaps at the paler end. All the paint companies do shades of taupe so worth a look. F&B Purbeck Stone is lovely, or the paler Skimming Stone, in fact look at all their neutrals which are lovely. Little Green’s Slaked Lime is also lovely (last picture).

Like your ideas. I think white or pale grey would really brighten it up. I think once it is painted you may find the worktop and flooring won’t be so oppressive.

You could also use tile paint on the splashback, rather than re-tiling.
