Planting advice please!

I absolutely fell in love with the garden on the left several years ago and have just managed to re-create the hard landscaping (pic on the right) after an extension last year. Clearly I am devoid of original thought (I blame home educating and home working!) but wandered if any of you green fingered maestros could advise me on the plants needed to replicate the look. I can identify camelia, heuchera and hydrangea but beyond that am completely stumped. Any tips gratefully received!

Wow that looks great! Beautiful soil too. I zoomed in and everything is green and so hard to identify, isn’t it? The trees at the back look like pleached beech possibly? The round balls look like box. The patio in your first pic does look like a shady spot. I’m sorry I just can’t work out the rest! I can give you planting suggestions, depending whether your garden is sunny, shady or a bit of both, if you so wish. 🌸

Wow, I’d love some planting suggestions Sonia - that’s so kind. Our garden is east facing coastal (Brighton!) with lots of morning and early afternoon sun. Thank you!

The thing is they have to chew and ingest them to have any effect, immensely unlikely, especially for a cat. They just don't chew plants, puppies possibly !! We've always had rhododendrons in our garden and haven't lost a pet yet. Azaleas too. If you're that worried, why not go for something with evergreen foliage with a good hint of red like red robins, and grow other plants around them underneath for a bit of ground cover. You aren't going to get the height or bushiness of a rhododendron with anything else, except for the roses.

I’ve just had the same issue and I opted to get all walls plastered then sanded down to give completely smooth walls. They were then painted and the finish was excellent. I paid for tradesmen to do all of this as I wouldn’t have achieved such a quality finish.

Such a lovely climber. I found my Star Jasmine to be very slow growing, but always flowering well. They need a sheltered sunny spot. I’ve read that they take a couple of years to really get growing so maybe it will do this soon! Unravelling a new climber, whatever species is quite easy if it’s small, that is cut off the plastic ties holding it to the cane, gently pull out the cane and unravel. Plant in position then tie the stems with twine or soft ties to the trellis. I’m not sure how a large specimen is tied in, but on Garden Rescue with Charlie Dimmock they often plant large climbers as they are and they don’t undo it from the framework it came on, just lean it against the trellis. To be honest I wish I had bought a larger one! I would recommend online garden centre Crocus for good quality plants that are well packaged.

Id probably keep it simple with just a couple of different type plants. A couple of shrubs I would use are choisya which is an evergreen with white scented spring / early summer flowers. It’s a slower grower but in a couple of years you should have a decent sized shrub, & hydrangea, which although it isn’t evergreen has lovely summer flowers. If you go for a paniculata variety, like ‘Limelight’ or ‘Vanille Fraise’ the flowers change through to autumn & can be left for winter interest. These are quite fast growers too & will grow to 6-8 foot. If that’s too big, there are smaller versions, eg Little Lime’ is the dwarf version of Limelight, which would probably grow to 3-4 feet. Either alternate them along the border or have the hydrangea at the back with choisya slightly forward. Another popular shrub is Ceonothus or California Lilac which I think is evergreen too. Agapanthus would be great at the front -available in blues, purples & whites. Look for the evergreen varieties rather than deciduous. You could infill with bulbs such as alliums or tulips for spring / early summer colour or snowdrops /crocuses for some winter colour.

Hi Julia, I’ve listed a few plants that I think may do well in a sunny coastal spot. If you want to see a full list, go to the RHS website and search coastal plants, there are loads!

TREE - Hawthorn - eventual heigh 10m (may be too tall but it’s tough)

SHRUBS (tall) - Sambuca nigra, Tamarix, Viburnum bodnautense, Hibiscus, Choisya, Rosa rubiginosa, Rosa rugosa.

SHRUBS (smaller) - Cistus, Hebe.

WALL SHRUBS/CLIMBERS - Ceanothus, Trachelospermum (Star Jasmine)

TALL PERENNIALS - Eryngium, Agapanthus, Verbascum

SMALLER PERENNIALS - Lavender, Armenia (Thrift), Erigeron, Festuca Glauca (grass), Alchemilla mollis.

There are many more but I don’t want to overwhelm you! I wouldn’t get a Camellia as they are a woodland plant that does not like direct morning sun. I’m not sure that Hydrangeas will cope with an exposed coastal site, but the Hibiscus and the roses mentioned I think do come in white, so a good substitute. You could try one Hydrangea and see how it goes but they are thirsty plants that hate drying out too much. Here’s some pictures, 1 - Rosa rugosa, 2 - Festuca (grass), 3 - Hebe, 4 - Erigeron

This is exactly what I needed as I struggle with the differing height idea and the pics you’ve posted are exactly the look I’m after. You are an absolute gem. Thank you so much.
