Best plants / shrubs to use to reduce traffic noise?

Hi, we are thinking of buying a bungalow where the back garden backs onto a busy road. Any ideas of the best things to plant along the rear fence to reduce traffic noise would be appreciated please. Thank you

Hi there, how much space have you got? There isn't one solution to this issue unfortunately and layers are key. The taller the better but bear in mind the impacts of also inadvertently screening out the sun.

If you want privacy at the front of your home to stop people to seeing in, then you could either change your gates to completely enclosed the area and have a CCTV system set up so visitors can alert you when they arrive. Or preferably, you could separate the two drives by erecting a fence between the two garage doors and plant a nice tall hedge 3/4 of the way along the front boundary to obscure the view of the main house. You could then reverse round the hedgerow and park the car at an angle so it is partially obscured by the hedgerow, with CCTV and security lights shining down from the top of the garage to give you peace of mind. It would be lovely to remove the gates and be able to look out of your front door and see the hedgerows, and they would also help to muffle the sound of the traffic

last 3 have been small villages/towns. I will admit to horrible mail service, 3 electric bills in 4 years balanced by the fox wandering through down town one day. The inability to go anywhere for nearly a week due to snow balanced by the absolute silence and sudden bunny party due to a fresh snowfall. The inability to go anywhere for over a week due to one of the typical floods, where the county actually comes around in big trucks, just to watch the watch slosh in your front door balanced by watching a minimum of 100 eagle, white and gold, hunting as the fish come into the swamp to spawn. Pluses and minuses, to me, far more pluses.

I need to resurrect this thread! So 2 years on we've completed all of the downstairs internal work, and knocked down the garage. We spread some grass seed, and there is now a garden space where once sat the garage. We did have a builder booked in for rebuilding the garage to the side of the house, and planned to add some decking where the patio doors are along the back of the house!/wall maybe, but now the builder has cancelled and is returning our cash, we're therefore reallocating funds to a much needed upstairs bathroom instead. I wonder if there are any budget friendly suggestions and ideas to make an area that will hold gardening tools/provide cover for my partner to do his hobbies by the side of the house? It's a wall then huge hedge beyond that which is directly parallel with a footpath and road on the other side. I thought about a shed but would the hedge not be impossible to cut and would it rot quicker, plus would the roots die off? We need to keep the hedge or have some privacy from the road, but equally need a place to store and use the space at the side. Thoughts?
