where to position recessed LED's in kitchen, ideas please?

Hi there everyone, need to some gurus to help with where to put the lights in the kitchen/diner. Worktops are concreto dark grey quartz, up-stands are the same as are the splash backs for the hob and sink.

Worktop for the breakfast area/peninsula will also be oak.

Appliances are all chrome silver, Extractor is angled black glass.

The tall units in the kitchen are also anthracite grey , the rest of the base units are white.

Walls will be painted white.

We also have a wood effect ceramic tile, laid out in herringbone effect.

Dining area will be a big wooden table with stools on one side and bench on the other

Drawings below give you an rough estimate of what the kitchen / diner looks like (Width is 7.74 metres by 3.5 metres)

I can describe one (my) kitchen - might generate some ideas +ve or -ve.

2x wall light switches -

#1 - does a central row of lights which lights the room - but not too bright.

#2- under cabinet lights and specific work top lights - i.e. working lights

#3 - normal cooker hood spots

That sort of system works quite well - i.e. gentle lighting for morning/evening, and separate single switch illuminates the working areas.

Your kitchen looks more complex - so potentially a separate light - 2-3 pendants over the breakfast bar switched locally might also make sense?

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I suppose I should have attached an image. Here's my drawing, there has been a few adjustments but it is basically the same. The blank spot is been set aside as a family area. I appreciate the need for good light in the kitchen and I'd like to go for recessed lighting but my fear would be that there would be to many of these lights and it might look like a shop! If I were to opt for recessed lighting how many would I roughly need? Would it be best just to keep the recessed lighting in one half of the room - kitchen or family side? The large circle is a table top where we can eat and there will be a suspended light hanging over it. After reading perry525 remarks it occurred to me that I'm extremely left handed and I suppose I'd have to take that into account, Your opinions welcomed. Cara

My advice is stop wait think this through. Christmas is very soon don't rush it. Get lots of advice and maybe get some professional kitchen designers to draw some options up for you. The plan you show to be frank doesn't look great. So much more can be done than just putting units all the way round the room. There is too little detail on your plan to be able to come up with specific suggestions but think about things like: - opening up the window or enlarging the doorway to fit patio doors onto the garden - trying one straight run of units and an island with sink or cooker rather than units all the way round the room. -think about mixing free standing and fitted furniture. A dresser for example gives lots of storage but is narrower than a standard kitchen unit - think about using non standard depth of units I suggest looking at the ikea kitchen catalogue. Even if you don't like the units they are very good at showing novel layout solutions.

Hi. That door doesn't actually seem to let in much light and the current worktop and units aren't bouncing a lot of light so I'm wondering if you need a window once the wall is down? What if you extended the FF run to the end of that run adjacent to the oven and had mirrored backed shelves within a cabinet? (Hope that makes sense!)I think the light units will make a huge difference anyway and you can add a large mirror opposite the patio doors. I agree with the earlier comment re extending the peninsula under the 2nd window. I love banquettes so might lose the sofa in favour of! Here's a link. It's a way off but as you have so many doors I'd paint them all in the wall colour so they blend in. I MUCH prefer MATH's plan, or even switching the hob on the back wall of your plan. I am not a fan of hobs on islands :( . Personally I wouldn't subject my friends to a film of grease and cooking smells wafting directly onto them as they are enjoying a drink the other side of the bar, even with a pop up hood things won't be much improved because of the noise level they bring, even the quieter ones are still noisy and annoying in such close proximity. Plus there's always a host of kitchen paraphernalia needed to have on hand as you cook, room needed to remove a pan, dish out etc., with a sink at least you can add a wooden board over the top to hide the mess in the sink and provide some extra surface. And let's be honest in reality the need for you to have your back to your guests for long as you cook something on the hob at the back should not be for long, most of us cook things in advance with only minimal cooking left to do once guests arrive.

If you read over a breakfast bar (sorry, no time to look properly) then you may want to be able to switch the light above that on and off separately to save lighting the whole place. Ensure that recessed lights are spaced according to the ceiling you have after you've put wall cupboards in place (tall ones flush to the ceiling also saves cleaning and you can use a slim stepladder to reach stores etc in the upper shelves) and ensure that lights are central above work surfaces so you aren't working in your own shadow. My electrician refused to believe this would be the case and we had to install a second row of lights to correct his error. I hope this helps. (You'll clock that my lights were not put in well!)

Under cabinet lights are great if you need them. I found that I didn't but my main work surface is below a window and the draining board is under another cupboard and toaster/mixer etc under the cupboards flanking the hob which has a light above that in the hood.
