Kitchen colour confusion

I am so bewildered and would love some wise input.

I need to update my kitchen. My absolute intention is to replace the wooden worktop with a quartz one and replace cracked ceramic sink with undermount (have chosen Blanco Etagon siligranit). The floor will also need to be redone and my thoughts are Karndean wood effect. However 2 trusted workmen have since suggested either repainting or replacing kitchen doors which are currently a vanilla cream colour.

Are cabinets so terrible that I should change them?

If I do keep the current colour should the worktops be light or dark?

I love black onyx with a little sparkle but worry it might be too stark a contrast.

I rather like the idea of a soft green tile to replace the existing ones

builder has suggested no tiles, just upstand - and taking the quartz up behind the cooker instead of a tile splash back - which would rule out black as it might look like a black hole in the wall - also the space is not symmetrical and I think that might look odd!

My head is spinning so I would love your thoughts. The kitchen, although north facing, gives out onto the patio garden so it gets good natural light - and I really want to keep my curtains which I love! Pictures of existing kitchen below (bit messy, sorry) - also green tile & curtains.

My poor, befuddled brain thanks you in advance for any suggestions!

What colour worktop are you planning?,You mentioned quartz but what colour? If it's a white/marble look it won't go with your doors which look cream. The unit doors look fine in the pics.

Ellie my first choice would be black with a bit of sparkle - or maybe grey (again with a bit of sparkle)

Hi, Firstly, I love the room, it has a lovely feel and the table, in my opinion, works really well. The issue for me is about zoning, you need to clearly define the spaces, open plan rooms need to have defined areas. The rug idea is really good idea but you need to make sure it is large enough to define the space and allow the chairs to sit on it even when pulled out. Have you considered putting a larger chandelier in to really define the space ? Something really OTT...... make a statement ! The windows would benefit from full length curtains even if they were dress only to frame the windows. These would soften the dining area and centralise the eye on the table / chandelier. The lights over the island are difficult to specify, if you put modern in the don't go with the dining room, if you put traditional in they don't go with the kitchen. Have a look at naval lanterns. The chrome ties in with the kitchen but the shape is essentially traditional. I use these a lot and they always look good, I hang them in groups of three or four. Love the black stools Jones 1987 have suggested. With regards to the back wall, pictures for me. Large black and black and white pictures. Adds interest and injects personality. Why change the floor? It looks great as is, it's already neutral, at least it appears to be in the photos. I'd save your money and change the counter top to something beautiful and light reflective - granite, marble or the like (see photo below). Remove all the flowery pink curtains and replace with white (see image below). Paint the mauve beam on the ceiling white. Remove the pink rug. Remove pink back splash as you said, and add white herringbone backsplash (see image below). Basically remove all traces of pink! This is not a huge amount of work at all and will make your kitchen look STUNNING. Counter tops and curtains like this: Backsplash like this:

@Man- Thanks for your advice. That was our first thought but we are afraid if that will look odd . I believe same shade ( which is dulux soft stone) will look different when painted on glass than on wall, am i right?

I don't think black or grey go well with cream....are your units a cream coloured?

Is no 1 what you were leaning towards? However no 2 shows what appears to be your cupboard style and worktop with a glass blue subway, with just a tile change you could have a new look! A pale green glass subway would tie in well with your curtains.

just looked at your tile choice... yes!! In my humble opinion, the worktop i think the wood is warmer. Black is quite stark and itself can become dated

Your kitchen is very similar to mine! The units look absolutely fine and I LOVE those sage green tiles! I was going to change my oak worktop, but had a bit of a wobble at the huge cost of quartz so decided to rub down and re-oil the worktop and it looks good now! If you are going for quartz, then a more cream/stone coloured one would go nicely. I wouldn’t go for black, it’s a pretty dated look. Upstands and splash-backs are a personal thing, some prefer that and others prefer tiles. Go with your heart, it’s your kitchen not the builder’s! This is my sisters quartz worktop. She didn’t want stark white either.
