Kitchen confusion!

Hi everyone!

We have just purchased our home and have inherited the attached kitchen. The worktops are Maia in colour Mocha. We plan to paint and remove the pink splash backs. We are also considering changing the flooring. However, we are unsure on colours! We both prefer a more neutral look.

Any thoughts and idea you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Why change the floor? It looks great as is, it's already neutral, at least it appears to be in the photos. I'd save your money and change the counter top to something beautiful and light reflective - granite, marble or the like (see photo below). Remove all the flowery pink curtains and replace with white (see image below). Paint the mauve beam on the ceiling white. Remove the pink rug. Remove pink back splash as you said, and add white herringbone backsplash (see image below). Basically remove all traces of pink! This is not a huge amount of work at all and will make your kitchen look STUNNING.

I personally quite like the flooring you have at the moment and think it works well with the current colour scheme and kitchen cabinets. It offers a nice contrast to the cabinets and would work well with many accent colours should you decide to change from pink.

I personally find that the worktops are too 'heavy' and dark for the light airy kitchen and would change that if possible.

I also quite like the floor.. Adds warmth and texture.. I'd add colour glass splash back in pale grey and loose the rug and curtains and blinds ...

although looking at pic again the upstand and lack of splash back behind hob might cause issues .. ..

I'll agree with ProSource Memphis, you need to install an engineered wood floor because of the concrete. For our customers that are in your exact situation we offer engineered products, prefinished and unfinished (site sanded/finished), that have 3-5 mm wear layers. Some of these products can withstand 2-4 sandings, which equals way more lifespan than a cheap engineered floor. This equals less cost in the long run, but higher cost up front. Basically the thicker the wear layer, the better chance your engineered floor will last longer (80 years + estimated for 4-5mm), and the more expensive it will be. ProSource is correct, gluing a 3/4" solid floor down can be problematic and not worth the risk. Especially when there are high quality engineered floors that offer essentially the same thing. Engineered is going to be more stable with your fluctuating climate as well. You'll want a hygrometer in the home to monitor relative humidity. It should be somewhere around 30-60% RH for the floor to play nice. There are so many more variables involved in this discussion that entire books can probably be written. But that's my $.02

Your kitchen is very similar to mine! The units look absolutely fine and I LOVE those sage green tiles! I was going to change my oak worktop, but had a bit of a wobble at the huge cost of quartz so decided to rub down and re-oil the worktop and it looks good now! If you are going for quartz, then a more cream/stone coloured one would go nicely. I wouldn’t go for black, it’s a pretty dated look. Upstands and splash-backs are a personal thing, some prefer that and others prefer tiles. Go with your heart, it’s your kitchen not the builder’s! This is my sisters quartz worktop. She didn’t want stark white either.

Hi. Looks like a big plot so I can see why you’re struggling for ideas. Could you post more photos of the garden from different angles (You can post extra photos in comments.) Might help to generate some ideas. Where do you currently park your cars? What does perc stand for? With a large space like this I think there’s lots of possibilities. I’m guessing you’ll be getting landscapers in. Did a quick doodle and thought to use both x and y for patio and also a little path to an extra patio. Thought it might be good idea to make the most of both sides of the garden. 🙂

Keep it neutral on the walls. Some green in the form of herbs / plants will give it a bit of life. I agree with others that flooring works well unless there is anything wrong with it that we can't see.

I think the previous owners chose a theme and you should do the same. Buy curtains and a blind that has the natural feel that you like and then choose a splashback and paint colour to work.
I also agree that if you want a natural feel the floor works more than the worktop

I guess you want to keep the worktops because of the cost. I too like the flooring. However that splashback is simply gross. Get rid of the splashback and if you have a coloured one then tie into the kitchen the same colour scheme and see if you feel more happy with that.

Hi e c. Change the painted joist, rug, curtain and blind to a plainer, more simple block colour and you're almost there with your desire for neutral.

the backsplash which AprilFourth shows is divine and will add good texture (where is it from btw @AprilFourth?)
