Fit kitchen before or after commissioning UFH

Hi, i am building an extension, on the ground floor the kitchen / dining / living area has wet UFH, i used a standard concrete mix in lieu of screed. I have been told that the UFH should be switched on to remove moisture before fitting the tiles; even though the concrete was poured 2 months back. Any thoughts on this?

Also, i plan to fit the kitchen before the UFH is switched on, will this create issues later i.e. if the floor moves with the heat / moisture removal, will it impact the units that are fixed in the island area and against walls? Note: Where the kitchen units sit there are no UFH pipe below.

I have no direct experience - but I'd be inclined to somehow test the under floor heating was fully working before dropping 20k+ of kitchen & finished flooring on it and then finding out something had to be changed?

Thanks for the reply. Good point, lifting a floor would be bad enough but having to break down the kitchen would be as bad or worse...

hi all. please let me start by apologising for the messy state of the temporary kitchen photos I've attached. it's still a building site. arghhhhhhhhh. having an L shaped kitchen and island installed soon. my question is. the layout will be similar to the current temp layout in the pictures. back wall will be floor to celing units with American fridge freezer. other Wall will be worktop with floor and wall units. large 2.8m long Island that will bridge kitchen (tiled) and family room (wood) floors. I was planning to tile first but with the island how can you be sure that the tiles will be symmetrical around it? sure you could move the island a few inches one way or the other but there's no gaurentee that the walkway will look symmetrical. best to tile after to get joins and ground lines where they look best? also the builder put down t&g 22mm chipboard on joists in kitchen. will need to put some sort of cement board over to tile to but this will mean the finished floor height will be slightly higher than the rest of the house. any issues with this? thanks all

I don’t agree. I think fitting cabinets to the ceiling can make the ceiling feel lower, feels like an American Aesthetic rather than a British one, means that you can’t read the proportions of the room as well and therefore can make the room seem smaller, it can highlight ceilings that are wonky and you loose opportunities for over cabinet lighting which can contribute more to the atmosphere of a kitchen than ceiling spotlights.

You can pressure test the UFH pipework before filling with water to check for any leaks by pumping air into the system and attaching a pressure guage to check for any pressure drop. You'll also need to check that the moisture level is low enough as well before tiling and fitting a kitchen especially if you have wooden doors and worktops. Concrete can take a month just to dry an inch or roughly 1mm per day.

Thanks for the feedback. By the time i fit the kitchen the concrete will have been in place for roughly 90 days, as its 65mm thick i am assuming that should be enough time, or do you recommend doing a moisture test?

I think your floor tiler will carry out a moiture check before he starts so if he's happy to tile you shouldn't have any problems. The other consideration is what materials your kitchen is made from, if you have wooden doors and wood worktops you might want to get a dehumidifier and follow the instructions for storing and fitting the worktops as they can move if there's a lot of moisture in the air.
