exterior visualisation/architectural design

Hi all,

My wife and I have bought an 1800’s cottage that is in need of some serious TLC, a good friend of mine is a commercial structural designer and has drawn up some plans for us to extend and re-jig the layout however by his own admission he isn’t an architect and so the design is down to us - he will advise on what’s within the art of the possible and help us with build schedules/material estimates/planning applications etc.

Whilst we have some ideas on how we want the extension to look we’re keen to ensure the design is holistic and well considered in its approach and so I have 2 questions if I may:

Is there some software or a service to turn my friends 2D plans into external renders to help us visualise the finished building?
If not would an architect consider taking on purely the design elements of a project knowing we had someone who would finish the process for us? If so would anyone know the cost of this type of service?

Hi Joel,

We have coincidentally, just completed a very similar service for a contractor we know - who wanted a 3D render only, to help their client visualise what they would be getting. We did this online from an image so there was little to no hassle for us or them, and (we think) for a very competitive fee.

In answer to your second question, certainly we, and no doubt other architects would take on the design elements only - especially since this is the part we all tend to enjoy the most! If you would like more info, feel free to drop us a direct email or give us a call on 07703682107.

I did set up account on Qtect, I am not sure the service offering at QTect provides the adequate level of interactivity for me to submit a detailed design brief. Good sales pitch though, but I am not sure I would be able to set and convey my expectations however the propective designers budgetary need is already baselined right from the onset, which equates to a one way street, what if the 3 options (from all the designer proposals) are all rubbish, I am not sure it is a good idea to commit to paying for work that does not involve focused consultation.

Hello all, I think the main aspect of a designers role is reading the client and the space designed. Clients always have some idea but the real skill is identifying what they really want and what the space wants. Those are separate considerations and the designers role is fusing the two, whilst offering somethings the client hasn't thought about. Thus stretching what is considered beautiful design and offering the client far more than they ever thought possible. That is how I would approach my work. I'm not interested in offering someone what any other designer could offer. I'm constantly striving to provide more! I'm not happy with average or commercial. I like Minnie's idea about designers being artists because they should be. Design is far more than a drawing, far more than spatial awareness or planning. It's about complimenting product with colour, client and architecture. It has to be instinctual. It has to have flair and therefore I would consider a good designer to be an artist! :))

Loved reading this discussion! I am an interior designer and have done my interior sketchign courses with BehindCanvas. The tutor is amazing and you can do the tutorials online in your own time and rewatch them. Highly recommend if you're interested in mastering sketching from zero!

White and brick is a classic and you really can't go wrong with it. But it does look a bit old and faded. Try looking up companies that do brick cleaning and sand blasting and perhaps reponting in a colour. (they mix the colour to match the bricks or another colour. The thin lines, when viewed from far, can alter the perceived colour of the bricks.- For example if you wanted a ';yellow brick house' but you 're stuck with brown, repointing in yellow will pick up the yellow tones in the brown brick and it will be yellow. Same goes for the other colours found in the brick. examine which colours are present in your current brick closely. Use a magnifying glass if you have to! You will be amazed and all the colours present in there. Then sandblast and have fun. Do this before you change the windows, as sand blasting can be damaging to the upvc, and then repoint after replacing windows. Depending on the colour the walls come out- Ask for samples on a north and south walls- then choose a black frame (for example with black poinitng) or white with the lighter colours. After a decade or two, then I would look at rendering, but for the moment, try the conservative route since the rendered look can't easily be reversed
