window and fascia on a red brick house
Hi all
We have a red brick house which currently has brown wooden double glazed windows. We are building a side extension and are undecided what colour windows and french doors to add.
Brown does seem quite old fashioned but may be the cheapest option as existing windows/doors wont need to be changed. The other option would a grey/ anthracite/ black upvc windows in the extension and paint the existing windows/doors to match to modernise the property. What would everybody suggest?

Comments (6)Painted houses are very costly to maintain. You can get special paint which lasts for x years which is quite expensive but as the red brick is attractive I would personally leave it. As your doors are fully glazed, you should be getting the maximum amount of light into your hall now? Is the hall decorated and furnished so as to maximise light? Comments (19)I agree with earlier posts that say the door is an individual choice- I think all the choices you have considered sit well with the house. As far as making the front more interesting I would have new stone flags laid in front of the door and have this area a little wider and deeper so it is more imposing. I would cut boarders against the house to soften the hard landscaping and better highlight the front entrance. I think the flatness of the exterior that you have described is because there is no window to the right of the front door and trellis could help with this. I also think your porch light is undersized. Personally I think that when you have better signposted the entrance you won’t feel an additional porch will add anything. Comments (4)It’s quite difficult to see from the photos as the scaffolding is still up and we have mahogany windows which are very dated and I don’t want to keep. The fascias around the roof are black but I feel that the fascia is so large that black will be too huge and stark. I’m feeling in a dilemma. I hope the photos help a little....See More

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoThere are many different ways to create harmony between your brick, windows and trim colour. Here are just a few examples.
Your brick belongs to the Yellow-Red Hue Family.
A classical monochrome palette would mean choosing paint colours from the same Hue Family. The colours would have an organic connection, as they share elements of the same colour ‘DNA’.

NCS (Johnstone’s)
These lovely bronzes, come from the adjacent Yellow Hue Family. They are very similar to Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze, if you wish to look for photographs via Houzz, Pinterest etc. They are more complex than just ‘brown’. Like bronze, they are impacted upon by varying light and can appear sometimes brown, sometimes charcoal and even have a suggestion of a greenish cast.Marylee H

3 years agoThe top two colours here are from the Green-Yellow Hue Family and form an alternative Diad palette with the Yellow Red Brick.

3 years agoI think French Grey windows look lovely with red brick, or white, which is still the most popular window colour. French Grey is a greeny grey. Here’s a couple of pics to inspire.

3 years agoHere is the back.we removed the old conservatory and rendered that area. You can see the new windows against render and brick. I think white can work well on brick if the windows are beautiful on perhaps an old house, but mine wasn't in that category.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI was in the same dilemma with mine, glad I didn’t go with the current trend and think a bit outside the box as to what suited my home, I ended up opting for ral 7039 quartz grey, it’s a an unbelievable transformation to the outside of the house
a LOT of work but worth it, All reveals sprayed and new rubber seals, not a sign of the old oak windows inside or out!
pick what will work best with your colour and for what its worth I don’t think it’s black or anthracite, far to strong aginst the red brick some great suggestions here,
my new window colour.
