what colour for a combination of timber & aluminium windows?

Our is going to be totally renovated, we will have new openings, some large, bifolds, and a mix of timber & aluminium windows. The roof will be changed too .. an orange pantile roof. We have chosen antrancite grey RAL 7016, but now unsure?? Any advice?

It depends if you want to keep its character or not. Grey will completely change it. I think it’s down to personal choice -I dislike grey windows unless they’re going into a house built for them but lots of people love them and would hate my white windows!

Stick with your instincts and to the values of the heritage of your lovely Victorian home.....go with wood and not upvc. I'm in a Victorian home in Scotland, and 115 years on we still have the original wooden frames (still in great condition) and with the new techniques of production, you'll not have to think about painting them for a long time, but will be happy to look at them for a long time and not regret having made the wrong choice!!!

Hello Emma, first of all I do not represent windows suppliers, for this reason I have no intension to sell you specific windows type :) Secondly I am working as project manager and everyday discuss these questions with my customers who are building homes. Mixing two different styles - traditional and modern may not work out very well. House is one object and it should stay in the same style. Advantage of using aluminum windows is that vertical bars between glass partitions are very narrow. So you will have a lighter structure look. Wooden windows definitely will have thicker bars, depends on windows profile and producer but can be about 5 cm wide. We have developed one project in Chamonix France. We had long discussions, because house was facing Mont Blanc mountain and owners wanted to see most of it. In the end we went after wooden frame windows, and we were happy with the result. I had the same issue, decided to bite the bullet and replace all the windows with aluminium like the shiny new extension. I think consistency is a key part of design, and I have not regretted my choice. I am too much of a stickler for detail not to become increasingly annoyed at the difference.

Thanks for responding. As the house is in a conservation area, it was a compromise to have the windows in timber. The bifolds, and the double doors are in aluminium and a glass/ aluminium double height wall is at the back of the house.

That’s interesting-our conservation officer was happy with white “heritage” upvc. On colour, we had an architect pushing us to grey bifold windows etc (despite excluding the idea in our brief) but our interior designer encouraged us to embrace the country feel of our property and, coming to the end of our extension and refurb, we love it.

Such a beautiful house full of character. I don’t think the dark grey will suit your lovely house, except maybe for the bifolds? I think more traditional shades like white, cream, taupe or sage green will be more in keeping. However, during my search I did find this first pic in grey, not as dark as anthracite, and it does look rather good!

Personally if you are adding to the 'orange' then dark blue/black will actually balance it. Anthracite looks too harsh in my opinion on pale render but can look really good with lots of orange.

No we went for white “ash” (ie it has a grain rather than glossy) flush upvc (would have preferred wood but too expensive). It is a slightly off white which softens the look and we are delighted. I spent ages playing with photos of my house using Paint3D -I tried colours, with and without bars, changing size. In the end it was clear our windows had too many bars but the house lost character with plain windows. If braver we would probably have gone with the green Sonia has shown, but we’ve had a door that colour instead! But this is all personal taste-our neighbour managed to persuade conservation to allow a full makeover (anthracite windows with render) so it looks like a brand new house. Not my taste but he absolutely loves it and can’t understand why we haven’t followed suit. Yours is a beautiful house and could be as stunning as Sonias photos! Have you had your timber/alu and glass priced up yet?

Why the orange pan tiles for roof? Combined with the orange - red brick it could be a bit too much orange, and pan tiles are heavier than the slates you already have. The grey brown colour slates look good as they are. I think the windows look great in white, but they could be stunning in dark frames too
