Karndean Art Select Herringbone vs Plank in Glacier Oak

Laying new floor over entire ground floor (including an open plan lounge/dinner kitchen that opens onto a North facing patio through large glass sliding doors). We are a restricted in floor build up height to under 15mm, hence going for a Karndean LVT floor (Art Select, Glacier Oak or Mountain Oak) in a herringbone pattern, instead of a wood floor. Trouble is with Lockdown, etc, its been hard to see one these laid out over a large area (in situ, as it were). Does anyone have experience of these? I prefer the glacier oak I think, but unsure whether to go with the herringbone vs a plank layout. Advice appreciated.

We laid Karndean down everywhere in our previous house, and loved it. Definitely recommend!

I agree with you, I prefer the Glacier Oak and I also think it looks nice in the herringbone layout.

I don't know if these help, but I definitely love the herringbone layout. And I agree with you about glacier oak, but I do recommend you Google it or search on social media, people have uploaded pictures of Karndean laid in their homes. This means you can see exactly what it looks like in a big space.

We use these in our CAD programme ... can work very well in whole floor applications - sometimes the herringbone works better in larger rooms than in smaller ones though ... you can have planks in smaller spaces - ie mix it up as long as the colour is all the same . If most daylight comes from northern light I’d suggest the warmth of mountain oak , If it’s mostly southern light then glacier oak can be just as lovely. Also take into consideration any wooden furniture that you have already.

Well, the chippies van was up the drive when I got home from work - a little unexpected. At first I thought that he was sleeping with the Mrs, but then I remembered that he needed to finish the skirting boards. He's done a cracking job - quite a few tricky internal/external corners, plus the corners not being exactly 90 degrees he was back and forth to his saw all the time. He really did a stirling job. It was 13 meters of skirting in total - which took him 4.5 hours in total (over 2 evenings) and it cost me £90. Considering I was origionally going to do it, it could well be the best £90 I've spent on this whole kitchen. I need to get a lick of paint inside the alcove that's pictured. Our little fishtank will be returning in there, but as it's out I may as well do it. When we get the bar stools, and dining room table & chairs I will update again. So: What would I change/add/remove ADD - Somewhere to hang the tea-towels. We have some on the inside of a cuboard, but they keep falling off. Maybe I need some slightly more expensive 'hangers'. The space where they could have gone we put a spice rack/draw thingie - that's probably better though. ADD - We forgot about the bin! Now we have our pedal-bin basically kicking around the kitchen. The Mrs has already filled the cupboards to maximum capacity so I'm having trouble getting an internal cupboard one past her. I think I may just fit one then deal with her later. The bin has gravitated to a semi-perminant place, but with the kids trying to be *cough* helpfull the wall is already beginning to get the odd splatter of 'stuff' where they just throw their food in the general direction of it. Last night I said 'Well, why don't we just put it in the utility room' - She shot that idea down instantly as she obviously isn't happy about the extra 4 steps that it would take to walk all-that-way into another room. Poor thing! Typical woman lol. ADD - At the start of the project I would have got the electricians to chase in another mains wire from the fusebox so that it comes out of the kitchen wall centrally to the back garden, then I would put a PIR Security Light in. I know that it's not a big job by any means, and I could, and probably will, do it myself over the coming weeks but if I could have had it without a wire on the outside of the house then that'd would have been perfect. Also, thinking about it, I would have actually got him to do it at the front of the house as well as he re-wired the whole downstairs with new fusebox etc.

Reclaimed Parquet - Modern Kitchen, help !!!

Unless you've got hours of spare time, I would avoid reclaimed parquet. I've just spent untold hours cleaning up a mix of reclaimed parquet I had in the loft (hard bitumen) and recently lifted parquet (wet bitumen) from our old extension before it was demolished. Although you can get glues that work with bitumen, you still need to ensure the blocks are relatively flat and clean. Worst thing is, although it looked like I had more than enough, some of it was unusable due to damage, so I'm now 3-4 sq metres short, and it's proving impossible to find the correct size and wood type. I didn't have a choice as the whole ground floor is herringbone parquet, so had to match it up, otherwise I'd have gone for new, it's not much different in price to reclaimed, and you don't need to clean it or sand everything level.

Bonkers… aaaarrrggghhh! We don't know what to say, Tani. Not acceptable but this trade of ours is poor at this sort of thing. Mind you, you do get them FOC. Paint… there's another story. Have to pay £5+ for a weeny sample pot. Delays are flippin' annoying but much better to make sure you are certain about your choice. We don't have a display unit in our showroom (drat!) otherwise we'd suggest you come and have a look whilst sipping on one of our exceptionally decent coffees.

I can see why you were attracted to them, they fit the spaces perfectly. The photos are showing that visually there is no separation from the floor so it is blending together. The abovementioned idea of painting the legs alone could be more impactful than one initially would think. Using a photoshop app sounds like an idea, but things still look different in real life - when you can see how light plays around and you can view things as you walk around the house normally (as against sitting and staring at an item directly trying to decide if it will work or not!) To try it out, it might be just as easy to wrap black paper around the legs and tape in position. Then you can leave it there for a while whilst you decide if it makes a difference, and if you are brave enough to do the painting yourself!
