Design Dilemma Flooring DIY

transition from floorboards to carpet? help

Hello,
We have sanded and in the process of vanishing our floorboards in our dining room.
The corridor however has carpet (with underlay).
How should we do the transition?

I found single door bar online (see image), but I am not sure it is correct (description say to transition from vinyl to carpet)

Any advices? Many thanks 🙏

Yes, that would work with floorboards (as well as vinyl)

Speaking as a designer and a houseowner, I like some of Kim and Natalies suggestions! I would go for a warm grey on walls - some greys are a lot warmer than others. A lot depends on which way your room faces and the quality of light in there already - if its a light room facing south or west definately go for lighter shade, otherwise you will zap the light, if its not a bright room, facing east or north, go for a darker grey, teal or navy - which is very fashionable at thte moment. If it needs warmth, go for gold or copper frames and accessories, black or white if it gets plenty of light. Above all, what feel are you after? Write down some words, collect images you feel drawn to (even if they don't relate to your room at all) they will help you work out what you feel about certain looks and the feeling you are after. But definately more modern fabrics for cushions, throws, etc on the sofas. I would change the sofa cushions unless your going for a faded, antique look. But personally in a room with this carpet and quite a traditional, slightly dull fireplace already, I would go brighter and more zingy and young, you don't want it going to towards the old folks look! You could stand some very bright oranges here and really zingy colours. Have a look at google images online and make a couple of moodboards, tearing out/printing off pictures you like. Its really a combination of working with what you already have, i.e. the room and its light or lack of it and its proportions/whats already in it, plus what you personally like the feel of. How can you combine those factors with some of the preferred ideas and images you have?

This sounds as though they having been moving and possibly coming loose from their fixings due to age, temperature, damp or wood movement. It's hard to say without seeing a photo. Have a closer inspection to see if it's anything that you can sort out yourself armed with a hammer and some nails or screws and screwdriver. If not, ask a handyman to pop round for a free quote. Yes I was thinking to have it stripped but under the black paint there is plain very light sort wood strips my husband bought himself and carved it oh. it hasn't got that antique look.But I agree with you, if the beams were original wood and darker I would definitely do that. Often I was wondering if I had the wood stained oak would it work?I don't want a fake stuck on effect.Someone wrote in a post on an other website that they painted their beams brown and they looked like chocolate logs. Wish I knew how to make the beams look aged and weathered.May I ask what flooring have you got with.the beams?original floorboards?I was thinking to have rustic stone laid down in the living room but the house is already cold and there isn't lots of draught.

When I had my engineered wood floor installed, the skirting did not have to come off, they undercut the skirting boards instead. It means the skirting is very slightly narrower but the job is very neat, professional and doesn’t have to have beading which would cheapen the look. This may be worth looking into if your 1st choice was a wooden floor.

I agree, it will give a clean edge from the carpet to the floorboards.
