How best to hide these electrics above our Victorian front door?
Comments (24)Hi - in response to Carol's comment, I attach a photo of what we've done so far. We had the power company come in and move the meter down slightly (that was the bit on the left in the original photo above) and put it onto a smaller backplate for us. Then we had our electrician in to put in a new fusebox. Then we had our carpenter in to make a small box picking up the moulding on the inside front door, which also matches the doors leading off the hallway. We had the plasterer in to make good the area. So far that's where we are as we don't want to paint until we do the whole hallway, and first we need to change the radiator from the old flat panel one to something more in keeping with the property. I particularly resonated with Jonathan's comment above, with the thought that the eye wants to 'read' the ceiling and floor details...we felt a big box going across the whole top of the front door would feel a little 'top heavy' - as we came down the stairs and as you entered the hallway from the kitchen. We are pleased that the footprint of the whole thing was massively reduced. It turns out to be a handy little place to stash a torch as well. Thanks for everyone's comments - it was very much appreciated. Maybe I can send a photo of the final final result once decorated!...See MoreI am a mess! How can I decorate above the sofa?
Comments (16)I would suggest taking everything off of your mantel (bar the lanterns), and mounting the mirror above it to the wall - don't have it leaning. The cupboard in the middle of the fireplace really needs moving... if you don't have enough storage in your side board without it then I'd suggest replacing both units for one bigger storage unit. You could also get rid of all your cushions, and replace with some brighter ones and a sofa throw - I would also move your sofa with its back against the window. And as people have said above, the rug is too small for the room, by replacing this for a bigger one it'll bring your space altogether. And lastly, check out Desenio.co.uk for artwork....See MoreHow do I remove ingrained nicotine stains from gloss kitchen doors?
Comments (11)I’m going to be stupid here and say are you sure the doors are supposed to be the same as the board behind? Perhaps the previous owners wanted a contrast. I can’t see a specific door that shows a stain as such. In your favour the doors are cut and edge board so are the cheapest you can get. The handles are boss bar handles and again one of the cheapest handles. You could remove the handles, get new doors and add the existing handles. Cut and edged board has 100s of colour variations, so plenty of choice. You could even have a multiplex edging to give a more luxurious touch (looks like a ply timber edging and gives a nice finish)....See MoreHow do I fix my door frame?
Comments (5)I think redecoration still has to be done if you replace the frame so I say don’t replace just redecorate. Firstly I would wash it all with a cream cleaner- then I would sand all the rough pieces of filler and chipped paint until it was smooth. Vacuum and wipe the dust away and then paint with a primer then eggshell paint. Use masking tape and newspapers to keep the paint off the floor. The prep should take only 30 minutes- the primer will take about 30 minutes to paint and then four hours later you can apply eggshell paint. You might get away with one coat of eggshell but it will likely need two. You need to check the tin for drying time but it’s probably 8 hours....See MoreP108 P
