How do I fix my door frame?

My kitchen door frame, which has no door, has got pretty battered over the years. Can someone give me a pointer on where to start with fixing it please?

You could remove it and replace with a new one. Would be easier than trying to repair it with filler and sanding. Or, since there's no door, perhaps just remove the door stop (thin strip of wood) and repair the casing.

I would just replace it. You can buy the pieces at any wood supplier or diy store. If budget allows, get a carpenter to do it for you.

@john clark I have just bought a walk in shower tray with fixed screen with black profile and support arm for £365 from showertraysuk if you are looking for that rather than over shower bath. Like Katie I got my shower (£160) and exposed trap (£45) for the basin from Victoria Plumb, pop up waste off soak.com (£12.99) taps very similar to Katie but with a rounded spout again off ebay (£65) I've not yet fitted my bathroom but I hope it looks as good as yours Katie!!

Nice screen design. Hmm, not an easy one. As there isn't much frame to notch into surface mounted fixings are probably the way to go, so the screen is not notched out for the locking mech. If you just want a simple latch try one of these, a plastic roller catch. You can get these in metal but for such a lightweight looking 'door' this might be ok. http://www.hafele.co.uk/shop/p/roller-catches/roller-catch/12056/9402 You obviously then need a separate pull handle to pull / push the door close / open. Something like this perhaps? http://www.hafele.co.uk/shop/p/stainless-steel-knob-furniture/fsb-door-knob-0829/41255/8387 The possible problem with a roller catch is there is no locking mech for privacy but as you can see through the screen I'm assuming privacy isn't really an issue. If you do decide to have a locking mech you should go for a bathroom type so it can be opened from the outside with a screwdriver in case of emergency. http://www.cheshirehardware.com/fortessa-satin-nickel-turn-and-release.html http://www.cheshirehardware.com/bathroom-mortice-deadbolt.html Surface mounted rim locks are also a possibility but I don't think there is an emergency over ride on these types of locks + the box size would be too big. Ironmongery is a huge topic and you can spend hours browsing for something but the above should give you some ideas. The two websites above are really good and if you have any questions you can phone them up and they are usually very helpful. Once you've worked out what you want you then need to find an ironmonger who sells it it, internet best but you can't see before you buy. Screen edges - you could get it lipped with hardwood, like oak or something. it would be a 2mm thick or similar veneer stuck on. Not sure if you have enough space for that though? A good carpenter would be able to help with that. Iron on edging strips are also a possibility, you put these on the cut edge of kitchen units, plinths etc. and you can get these in a variety of colours and finishes. You would need to fill and sand in the edges so they are all smooth and seamless. Hope you get it sorted, see you.

Hi Harriet. I think it's fine to paint this door in any lighter colour you like. For your interior doors and cupboards though you could consider painting them in the wall colour, it often works for smaller rooms with more than one door so they blend into the walls and it looks less busy and therefore more spacious

I think redecoration still has to be done if you replace the frame so I say don’t replace just redecorate.

Firstly I would wash it all with a cream cleaner- then I would sand all the rough pieces of filler and chipped paint until it was smooth. Vacuum and wipe the dust away and then paint with a primer then eggshell paint. Use masking tape and newspapers to keep the paint off the floor.

The prep should take only 30 minutes- the primer will take about 30 minutes to paint and then four hours later you can apply eggshell paint. You might get away with one coat of eggshell but it will likely need two. You need to check the tin for drying time but it’s probably 8 hours.

If just door stop , pull off and pin new one on

Rebated frame just fill, sand then paint easy
