American or French style fridge-freezer

Which is best - American (side by side doors) or French (fridge above freezer) style fridge-freezer. I'm used to American style, but need a new one and can't decide if the French style is better? Also handle or handleless?

Oh, didn't know fridge over freezer was French style. Very common in UK.

I have a “French” style (who even knew that was the name!) but I suppose the American style is more spacious. Just depends really. Mine has chrome handles that really show the finger prints, so a tad annoying!

The second photo seems old fashioned to me although I suppose it depends on the style of your kitchen overall (this has a more country style).

I am also not sure the ice maker is useful. Personally I prefer an integrated fridge to an American style one. On their own they are fine but most people have to build their kitchen around them which is rarely successful with a gap needed to open doors. In my opinion an integrated fridge gives you more cooling space, and doesn't spoil the clean lines of a contemporary kitchen and retains the cabinet feel of a traditional kitchen.

Some (I'm guessing most) American style fridge freezers need extra space for their door swing, but yes, inbuilt ones take up 2 x 60 cm, that's probably 20 cm more. But you will have more space inside the fridge/freezer too. American style ones are big lumps, but offer less space inside (I have one). If you can, look for a fridge that has a fresh zone (I don't know the technical term, differs from brand to brand), keeps your meat and veggies fresh for longer. Anyway, it's something to consider. Choices, choices :-)

Richard M, you can use car paint, it's not as hard as you think, in face we did our whole kitchen quite some years ago and it's still going strong, doesn't scratch once completely dry, so you can have whatever colour you like. Treat it with kid gloves till it's hardened and if you wish you can lacquer over for an even harder finish. We have a 'ford' dove grey kitchen, but i'm guessing a 'Lada' orange will work well for you!

I would say American purely because that's what I own and I find it so useful...I also have another separate chest freezer in my garage and a separate drinks fridge in the diner
American is a lot more spacious but if you live alone or a couple who doesn't eat much then it's not majorly useful for you

If you are looking at getting a handleless kitchen then definitely choose an integrated fridge. This will sit better in a contemporary kitchen.

It is true that the Chiller space is large in an American style fridge because the appliance is deep but this means it sticks out and you need more room to open doors. Also the freezer compartment is limited.

French door style fridges tend to be the same depth as kitchen cabinets and they don’t tend to need extra space each side to accommodate door openings. But every appliance is different so do check.

As long as its integrated so that it's ugly view is hidden. Can you tell I don't like the look of fridges?

if you have no room for the American fridge in your kitchen you could always move in to the utility room? that's if you have a room like that adjacent to the kitchen

I guess both fridges you are talking about are double door, and wider than regular fridges? I'm bit confused with some comments....
And difference is that french has freezer box on bottom+ 2 upper doors, while american has freezer in one side? Is that correct?

If thats the case, and you already consider space and budget (french are more expensive), my recommendation is:

If you are more used to use frozen food: go for american style, the frozen food is better organized than in french one.
If you use more fresh food: french style, the fresh food has better organization and space

I personally prefer...... French Style!.. because is wider space for fresh food to be stored (imagine a family size tray/cake) , I feel less food goes to waste, and i don't mind frozen food to be a bit stacked

But again, it depends on what you are used to.

Ah, double doors like French doors. That makes sense. I've just got bog standard integrated fridge over freezer then.

Ours is 70cm wide with double doors at the top for the fridge and two big freezer drawers.. I love it! There’s quite a range out there, so I’d look at the exact measurements you want and go from there?
