Best option for open plan kitchen layout?
Comments (15)I am not going to cast a vote, but would just offer some advice on thinking about the ergonomics of the space you want to create. People have mentioned the Golden Triangle in the context of the kitchen, which is a good guide for the kitchen layout, but thinking about the wider layout it is really important to think about how you, and others who share your space, actually use the space. How many of you will be "working" in the kitchen at any one time? Don't give up a disproportionate amount of real estate to the kitchen area - if storage is the driver then think of other ways of storing items, such as contemporary dresser in your dining area etc. Think about where the majority of occupants want to get to most frequently when they first enter the space; to a sofa, a dining table or a kitchen counter? Apply the 80-20 rule and maximise efficiency for the most frequent activities. What is happening immediately outside the space? Is it a space that looks better lit up in the evening when you are dining, or is it a space you want to gaze out at during the day? What else do you do at the dining table? Does someone work at it during the day? Is light a consideration? Will you have a TV on the wall? It may be good to have a wall away from direct sunlight as this can impair the visibility of a screen. So much to think about, but it really pays to spend some time upfront thinking about the use. Good Luck and enjoy the design process....See MoreFridges and freezers
Comments (8)Thanks for your thoughts. It is just for those kinds of days that you've mentioned so it does seem silly to cut into our our dining area but there is nowhere for one to go! We converted the garage and outbuildings for this extra space anyway. I've even looked for a slimmer fridge width but there doesn't seem to be anything available or one with a shallow depth for in the utility area....See MoreBest free website for planning kitchen?
Comments (6)Tried a few and find them fiddly! Here are a couple pics I pencilled up! Basically have a 6m x 5 m space for dining/kitchen. This will be the space that is created when the 2 rooms are knocked into one. The door into the room is on bottom left of pics. 5m length at top of pics is to the garden, this will include sliding doors to around 3.5m, doors onto garden. Ideally I do not want any kitchen wall units. All base units. On left hand wall, 4.6m length this will include a run of kitchen units to include range oven/hob, sink and washing machine. Fridge freezer will be located under the stairs as indicated. This space will be built in to include shelving/storage. I would like an island, but is there space? I would also like a dining table, 4 people but possibly an extending table to take 6. Could this dining table go along parallel to the sliding doors, Is there space? Any thoughts would be appreciated!...See Morehelp with open plan layout - where to put kitchen?
Comments (6)Jonathan - thanks, looks great but we hoped to have as much of the rear wall glazed as possible I did have a thought to put a low lying wall - around 1.1m high - and put kitchen units against it. That way we can have a sort-of kitchen island, and push dining table against the other side to leave enough room for seating area. Realistically it will be very few days in the year that we have more than 4 people round the dining table so I’m sure we can push the living room furniture over to the side if we need to pull out the dining table? Has anyone done this?...See Moreminnie101
