Too many cooks?

I have started the process of completing a downstairs renovation of my 1950's semi detached house. I have an architect who has already drawn up plans for planning permission etc. My question is this....I feel like I may need a kitchen designer to help with all aspects of what will be our new kitchen -diner. I will also have a builder in due course. How does it work having a designer, a builder and an architect? Will all three be stepping on each others toes? Do too many cooks spoil the broth? Any advise would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

If your plans are in for approval you’ll know the planned size of your kitchen. There are lots of posters on here that offer good advise relating to colour, design and especially kitchens.

Let us know the size, offer a plan that you have in your mind and include what you want appliance wise in the kitchen.

We’re here to help.

Will your builder be fitting the kitchen or will you have a separate kitchen fitter?

Once the architect has done his bit and it’s approved, the buidler will need to see the plans to give you a quote. Can’t see that each tradesperson will be treading on each other’s toes.

Architects will be able to guide you the to see the space you can have and help get the window to wall proportions correct amongst other essential bits ...

A good kitchen designer will design the space WITH you ( well that’s how I work !) so you are part of the process. And the resulting design reflects how you want to enjoy the area and keep things safe.

You or your builder can then use the designs to approach different suppliers to get the best deals and compare like for like.

Your builder will provide the skills to build and install and finish - sometimes they out source trades and will generally orchestrate the build.

So each has their skill set and each generally will be there to improve your experience and the final outcome.

It’s an exciting time - enjoy it !

But please remember to book things early - as it’s very busy for everyone at the moment !

Hello Tom, I think that if animals and their human companions are both happy! Then fine... What isn't right is keeping animals that need complex care or space and not being able to meet their needs.. Exotics, Primates and Birds can be far more challenging.. but equally if you're struggling then it's too much... Also leaving them alone for hours in the day is not right! Cats and Dogs are social and as such need company.. When you scold poor fido or felix for chewing/scratching the carpet it's because you left him at home... Dogs tied to a cardboard box, broken or not dog house outside 24 hours a day also is not right! I say take them to work with you if you're in an office or have somewhere they can be.. If not find them a walker or someone who can entertain them... An animal companion should be be happy and it should not be a strain. If it is then it's too much! People need to ask themselves.. Would my animal companion choose to want to be here in my home.. If they're happy and contented then you're probably onto a good thing! If they aren't then do what's right.. Also yes.. the RSPCA I have found to be less than interested! The whole not being able to intervene thing is ludicrous.. You cannot wait till something is on it's last legs! Of course this is largely due to bureaucratic red tape. Animals- four legged, fur, feathered, scaly, blubber. 8 legged, winged.. etc etc.. deserve the same rights as us human animals! and more as they can't say what they really need.. Well... they can but do we really listen! : ))

It’s annoying when their pitch is not relevant to posters question and when clearly they haven’t read the thread. There’s only one business posting occasionally that doesn’t do it that I can think of and that’s Fisher Paykel. And when they do blanket posting I feel a bit sorry for them cos that screams desperation to me!

Hi, Origin have put together a handy comparison table, looking at the difference between Bi-Folds and Sliding Doors, and the strengths and weaknesses. Hope this helps :) http://bit.ly/bifold-doors-vs-sliding-doors I would strongly recommend Bi-fold doors, I have them myself, they're so easy to use and look really smart. Never knew how amazing it would be to open a room into the garden until they were installed and they're an absolute godsend in the heatwave we're having!

A lot of people put in a per square metre, so you're not over that estimate. There are many variables and most of them depend on the lumen of the bulbs being used. So, if you want to cut down the number of lights to make it more aesthetically pleasing, just bump up the brightness of the bulbs. Downlights - How many do I need? Have a read of this article.

Thank you so much for your comments. Really useful and basically just what I needed to know. @OnePlan, yes! will need to start booking! @ Daisy, will probably post more stuff and questions relating to our renovation in due course. Not been on Houzz too long but already found it to be a valuable source of info. Thanks again!
