Small sloping front garden

Hi, I’m looking for ideas on what to do with this very small front garden area that slopes down to the footpath. It’s north facing and the property is rented out so we’re looking for very low maintenance but we want it to have kerb appeal. All the windows and doors have just been replaced and we changed the top bedroom window to French doors with a balcony. Thanks!

Large gardens are all well and good if have the energy & ability and you can afford the time (or money) for maintenance, but it's not always ideal. The size of garden should be appropriate to the size of house and appropriate for the lifestyle of the owners.

I thought en masses planting of just two or three grass types like Acorus, Japanese Forest grass and Red Baron (not exact names but you’ll find then by googling)

Thank you people! For your replies. I never thought about speaking to the colleges. Good idea! I already plan to add height with a square chunky black pergola, I’ve walked down there today and thought why on earth am I hanging on to my greenhouse - I grow seedlings cucumbers and tomatoes, but it’s otherwise just a dumping ground. It would be the perfect spot for a sofa or swingseat with fire pit which would leave the lower patio area free for a table and pizza oven (one day in my dreams!) It isn’t a small space, but I would like quite a lot from it. Budget is non existent - we have done everything ourselves by hand so far...Which we have enjoyed luckily! Hubby needs a spot outside his shed to tinker with our bikes. I have my veggie patch already but obviously would like more.. love the greenhouse but a smaller one would suffice. Loved my swingseat and want another..kids have a huge paddling pool that kills the lawn every year! Sun rises in the front of the house and sets at the back, so the garden is southwest facing. The new patio area gets the sun from morning through till about 6pm. And then lightly again at 7.30pm (big trees in the way!) The patio by the house gets the sun from mid morning till 7pm in the summer (it goes down behind those huge trees). Photo is 7.30pm taken from by the house. You can see the wonderful trees by the river. It is wonderful down there (albeit pongy!) as we don’t hear the main road as much - just the birds and the ducks on the river at the bottom of our garden

Interesting discussion Lynn. Your dilemma is similar to what I am pondering on at the moment for my house which made me pull out an old design book. As human beings we have a psychological need for shelter and safety. This is the principle of ‘refuge and outlook’. Per the book “ In a truly comfortable house, the inhabitants will feel sheltered and safe.... The core of the experience is to be able to comfortably observe the outer world from a position of relative security. Usually, the refuge is at a higher position and is enclosed and dark, the outside look is normally below, unenclosed and lighter. At its simplest we are outside looking out..”. Based on this I agree with the suggestions above that you should frame the window. I think it is the full glass wall all the way to the floor that is eliciting the unsettling feeling. So 1. yes put a bench in front of the window or better still build in a more permanent structure eg open shelving/cabinetry with a seating on top. Or Could you possibly put railing across the back of the window on the outside? This will still let light in but give it a sense of security. Consider adding some trim to the window to frame the view?. 3. Paint the room a bit darker to make it feel enclosed. If only I could take my own advice! I have an L-shaped dining room and I am thinking floor length glass doors all round will look stunning! However I am also thinking of how I would feel sitting there at night and so considering a half wall with windows instead - not as stunning but more comfortable? 😉. Still looking for the win-win scenario so ideas welcome. 😁
