Fill in grout lines before laying lino sheet

I am going to put down a vinyl lino sheet in the bathroom. It will go ontop of existing floor tiles. The tiles have got loads of missing grout.
I know I should fill this in before laying the lino, but with grout or something else?
If with grout, surely I don't need to remove the existing grout bits?
I've a bag of grout so don't mind using that.

guess grout or self levelling compound would work...depends on how even you want/need the finish :)

Even if you fill in the gaps eventually the vinyl flooring will mark to show where the tiles are underneath. You need to cover the entire floor with self level, a latex of some kind or a thin ply or MDF board. If you don’t in time it will ruin your new flooring.

Lol, Jesse, I had to study that photo AVSinteriors posted forever to figure out what you meant about the tile direction but after I did I do see what you mean. I never thought of it that way but logic states the water would run off the vertical lengths of grout far more successfully than it will the horizontal! I went in the current family bathroom and had a look at the tiling - very interesting. And a plan changer. I'm glad we hadn't gone too far in planning the shower area yet. Well spotted you on that tile, this is the first time I've heard anyone mention that! I love the inset teak mat-floor for the shower area of that wetroom, too.

I believe that most of the expense in refurbishing a bathroom is in the labour. You can buy a very cheap toilet and sink, but it will cost you a lot to fit it in. To spend as little as possible, I would suggest painting the room a darker colour and see what you think. This will make a big difference. Perhaps a darker grey in the same tone as one of the colours in the tiles. The best thing about paint is that it is easy to change if you don't like it. You can replace the sink taps cheaply and if you can find a towel radiator that fits in the same plumbing spot that will save you plastering. You can replace the shower hose with a shiny new one and get a new clip to hold a new shower head on the wall. You can put a long, silver towel rail on the wall above the radiator and hang a nice, fluffy towel there! If you get a bigger, more modern (plain) mirror on the wall and move all of your personal items out of there the room will look less cluttered. Give it a mega good scrubbing as well and you will enjoy using your new room. Let me know when you want to refurbish the whole thing but for now that will make a low cost alternative. I agree , as a former kitchen planner i would say dont be put off trying the independents,especially local ones, they will usually do their best to use your budget to good effect.They will come and survey and take a personal interest. I think the pale sage greeny grey is a lovely calm colour and as someone else said you cant continually worry about many years down the line..if it appeals to you now you will probably still feel comfortable for some time. Everyone thought cream doors would last forever but I got sick of mine eventually (10 yrs !) and craved light blue or putty grey.You cant be sure of trends but enjoy what you have chosen by making sure the layout works well for you.Spend time on that with your designer (.I use giant drawers a lot on the base as the stuff comes to you, no bending.Even my crockery is in them. ) Its true that wood can be painted and if you have a synthetic "wrap" finish it cant be updated except to change the doors. (But who knows you might sell up one distant day and not need to worry. I did !!). As for the floor , Ive chosen real wood this time and the warmth underfoot in this cold climate is fantastic.I dont think wood with wood is off limits but its personal taste at the end of the day, but it can look good if you introduce some leafy green plants into your scheme.It seems to instinctively go with other natural materials . Good advice also to keep oiling your timber work surface ,, it doesnt take long but keeps it from staining. All the best with your new project !

Jonathandb1972, I was thinking of going with a grout that is the same colour or lighter than the grey tile. The hex will be grouted in a medium grey. This has already been done in the loo (the hex) and looks great. Neither are grouted in the above picture. Do you think there will still be issues with where the grout lines are if they are the same or lighter than the tile? Also, where the hex tile in the shower meets the grey tile will mainly be covered by the shower's profile. However, the shower only goes up to about 2m, so there will still be a visible "meeting" of tiles above that. My builder is a little concerned about how this will look as he will have to cut small pieces of tile to fill up the edge, which may stain once they start grouting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best...
