To cove or not to cove?

We have no coving in our house at the moment. We go straight from a painted/wallpapered wall to the ceiling. Do we need to add coving to give it a nice finish? It seems a bit incomplete without anything.

😊 Does it look unfinished? I’m not sure if coving is still in? It’s quite a modern looking room.

Hi there, Ah ditto with the 60's house! We seem to have a mix of either rooms with no coving or rooms with plain coving. My father wants me to replace it all with decorative ornate coving, but I feel that with the age & style of the house, a plain one looks less out of place and more elegant. Of course it's down to personal taste. The dining kitchen off our through lounge doesn't have any and I'm contemplating not putting it in at all. Not sure if this would look odd or not, but we had bi-folds in and it's quite a contemporary room so doesn't need it (if that makes sense) Another thing to consider is the height of the ceiling. Ours feel quite low and coving makes the walls shrink even more. If you have at least a good standard height then you could get away with them.

Hello, my wife and I are currently renovating our 1930's London home and we would like to add some detail to the ceiling in the living room. Having explored our options we feel that, although lovely, proper cornicing is out of our budget, so we have decided to go with some cheaper coving from the local home improvement store. The ceilings are reasonably high at 2.7m (8.8") and the original skirting is quite deep to at 18cm (7"). Although just past the Victorian era we are aiming to subtly mimic this classic style, perhaps with some modern twists, but the question is how deep/what size coving do we go for?? Our options at the moment are 9.5cm (3.7") or 7cm (2.7")

What colour wallpaper would look good in this bedroom??

The wardrobes are a very traditional colour, so any other element which is also perceived as traditional may look a little 'staid'. I would consider a palette like this. Paint and Paper library Desert Rose is a lovely dirty pink beige which looks great with stronger teracotta accents and cleaner pinks. It would work with the purple colour of the wardrobe. Anything taupe would go flooring wise, just not orangey oak or pine.

Haha that is one tiny bit of room. When looking at your wallpaper I'd guess you're a more classical/romantic type and might have furniture to match. If so, yes some trim would look good. It's not what we say/think about it, it's how "finished" you feel the room is.

No. I don’t think it’s fashionable any longer. New houses I’ve been in don’t have it. Unfortunately my lounge does and I detest it.

It depends on your house, ceiling height, interior style etc. There is such a wide range available and it can often make a room appear more finished.

I agree with Victoria - it all depends on the house. If it’s a Victorian property with high ceilings and the original coving has been ripped out, then yes - replacing it would be great. However if it’s a more modern property with lower ceilings, don’t add something that wouldn’t have been there. Personally I really don’t like it when modern properties have had fake historic features added - it looks a bit odd, and it could even devalue your property.

Thanks everyone it is a modern house with low ceilings. We had to be really careful when choosing the lighting for the room because the ceilings were so low.

I wouldn't add coving if your ceilings are low.
